All artists have a bit of madness inside. If they don't, they cannot create real art. :) Also, from Wikipedia: «Lang Lang is also well known for his exaggerated mannerisms and facial expressions while playing piano». I guess that when they recorded MotS he pulled a lot more funny faces than Jim Carrey did in his "Unnatural Act" debut show...

Absolutely. Some people commented on youtube that they found Lang Lang's facial expressions irritating and mostly faked but I just love them. Many artists have their trademark mannerisms that are just priceless. For example Glenn Gould's clockwise swaying and humming may look weird and funny but was very natural to him. Mike's playing is also very distinct visually, surely it's not just for show, it's more like moving to (or is it with) the music. Thats what music is among other things, movement.

I can understand how some would find extreme mannerisms offputting, especially if they come across as affected. But I expect physicality is often a manifestation of musical technique. I also think it's sometimes simply excitement and joy. I recall quite a few criticisms of mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli's expressiveness and from what I've seen of Lang, he seems like a fun performer to watch.

Funny lady that bartoli too, though without a doubt a very good singer. Anyone that can execute that kind of mannerisms while not screwing up the music must be very good. If I play something that I just barely can, I can't relax and become very tense. To be able to play or sing something complex with ease is a mark of great talent and shows that the limit of what one can do has not yet been reached. This is true whether the person is faking it or truly caught up in that moment of joy.
