In the latest Phil Collins DVD ("Finally"), his bassist Leland Sklar plays a bass whose frets are not perpendicular to the neck, but slanted... at different angles. :) If they were prolonged, they'd look a bit like sun rays. Is this a standard model of bass I'm not aware of (I don't know about its maker...) or is it a customized model? The latter hypotesis sounds more probable to me, but I'd like to know more about it. ;)

Sounds like a multiple scale length bass, which may or may not be a Novax fanned frets (or Novax-licenced) instrument. It allows each string to have the optimum scale length fir its pitch, so the lower strings don't have to be so thick as to compromise tone. You'll probably know the effect of using short, thick strings for bass notes from playing the piano - it's the reason why concert grands are the length they are, and indeed, they're based on a similar design principle, where the treble strings are shorter and bass strings longer, rather than just being different thicknesses.

I haven't seen Leland Sklar's particular bass, so I don't know who made it, but the multiple scale length principle is something that a number of builders use.

Correcting my own mistake... :D

Lee Sklar's bass is a red-coloured version of this one. Yes, it's a Novax-licensed thing. :) Thanks a lot for this bit of info. ;)

I wrote a bit about Novax fanned frets in the 'Strangely-shaped guitars' thread (TubularTech). It commonly allows for a wider range as the lower strings can be tuned down and retain pitch. The Novax 8-string combines nylon bass strings with five strings of a guitar. In the right hands, the polyphony of it can sound quite funky!

The California Guitar Trio have six-strings with the same fanned-fret technology to allow Robert Fripp's New Standard Tuning (CGDAEG) which would otherwise lead to a lot of broken top strings on a conventional scale-length
