I've learnt about the existence of this English ambient/dance/electronica duo named Lemon Jelly from a Norwegian guy called Jørgen that I met in the IRC chat room [I go no longer in there since I got an akill saying that my domain is no longer welcomed by DALnet... :(]. I don't know if that guy posts here, and I don't even remember his nick (he signed himself with hundreds of 'em, in the room). However, I started listening to them thanks to him, and I liked what I heard a lot. They use a similar technique to the one used by Moby in his "Play" album, i.e. taking samples from old records, playing with them and on them. :) The main difference from Moby's use of samples is that Lemon Jelly's ones are shorter and they often consist of short musical phrases which they use as a sort of springboard to build their own stuff.

If anyone in here knows them, I'd like to have opinions. I just hope that the last idem above won't end up with the majority of answers. :)

Hey Ugo, MR Z got me into that band too...

last album they made is not so good, but first 2 really great.

i missed them recently because my wife could not read a map to a gig in Bristol UK, (i think on purpose)

So i recommend them here, especially the song with all the ducks are singing on the water.

That would be "Nice weather for ducks". Yes, it's one of their best efforts. ;) Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones plays bass and guitar on it.

About the third album: yes, I agree that it's not like the other two; the samples are weirder, so the album is weirder too. :) But I also have to admit that after a couple of listenings it grew on me. The only track I really can't digest is the last one, "Go", in spite of Mr. Shatner's excellent vocal work. :)

Sixth option: I don't know them and currently I'm not interested in "new experiences"..

Haha, hey, Ugo (and Andy). I rarely read these forums as my Oldfield fascination has died (or at least has fallen asleep), but
this Lemon Jelly topic got me interested.

I agree that the latest LJ album was a bit crap, but unlike you, I think Go is by far the best track! There are a few other cool bits as well, but I think the tunes have a severe lack of development. You should check out the DVD though - the tracks are just fantastic if you watch them together with the extremely creative and funny videos made by Fred Deakin´s own design company Airside.

I´m not participating much on IRC anymore, but join in once a month or so just to "catch up" (though there´s not much to catch up)

Btw, my nicks were mrZ/zerblatt (and a few others).

I tried to introduce some of you guys to Lemon Jelly a few years back but no one seemed to listen, glad you've finaly found them though. I saw them live here in Edinburgh a few weekends back, they were pretty good, and I saw them DJing here last summer. Have you heard the first album? It's arguably better than the second and I must confess I've not heard the third properly so I won't pass judgement on it. I wouldn't say they were consistantly brilliant though, both the albums I've got have some moments of real melodic wonder but there's a lot of very non descript tracks that don't seem to go anywhere. My favourite three Lemon Jelly tracks would have to be The Staunton Lick, Space Walk and Ramblin Man. I bet you didn't know this but both the guys in LJ used to be session musicians and one of them used to be in the backing band for the Spice Girls.

Whilst we're on the subject of discovering new bands I would have to point you all in the direction of an artist called Kieron Hebdon who goes under the name Fourtet. I would say he's as close to a new Mike Oldfileld as we're likely to get. He's a young (early 20's I think) multi instrumentalist working out of his own bedroom studio. He's got two albums out, one called Pause and the other called Rounds. Both got rave reviews here in the UK and Q magazine called Rounds one of the best chill out albums ever released. If any of you are downloading music try to get hold of a Fourtet track called 'My angel gently rocks back and forth' its a stunningly simple yet amazingly beautiful piece of instrumental music.
And for all you Mac owners out there i read recently that Fourtet are one of Jonathan Ive's favourite bands. So you can put Fourtet on and look at your computer/ipod and say to yourself ' I'm listening to the music that helped inspire the desgn of this' (probably)

My fav LJ tracks are probably The Staunton Lick, Come, Nice Weather For Ducks and Ramblin Man - but I like close to everything on their first two albums.

Talking about funny trivia about the LJ duo; Nick (of the Jelly) was Phil Collins´ landscape gardener and Fred started a nightclub in Edinburgh called Club Misery, with the slogan "the worst club in the world". I quote from their bio:

"One night, they put raw onions on the floor, so the more people dance, the more they cry. Another night is Vietnam-themed, with a smoke machine on full blast and Murray [a friend] shouting, "The horror! The horror!"

Priceless!

Yeah, Four Tet is great. Saw him live last year, great gig.

He has released three albums though, not two. His first one was Dialogue. Quite nice.

His next album, Everything Ecstatic, will be released May 23 (I think). I´ve heard it and am not convinced yet, but hopefully it will grow on me.

I'd forgotten about that earlier Fourtet album, it seems to be much harder to get hold of. Is it any good? I didn't know he had another album coming out, I'll check it out. Fourtet are quite similar to Lemon Jelly in that the tracks that are good tend to be pretty sublime but the other stuff tends to be a bit forgettable.

Weirdly there was a documentary on Radio 4 this morning about space flight and they played Space Walk by LJ. The guy on the show said that LJ sampled the voice of the fist ever NASA astronaut to space walk for that track.

On another note of recommendation I would have to also point you all towards a track called 'Surface to Air' by the Chemical Brothers. It's one of my favorite pieces of music in the world just now. An amazingly beautiful and euphoric piece of instrumental music. Check it out, it makes you fly!

Nothing to do with LJ, but linked 'cos Mr Z mentionrd him to me...

Nitin Sawhney is a british/asian artist whose work is not a million miles away from Mike's TSODE. Electonic mix of asian sub continent and other stuff. Dead Man puts american blues guitar/harmonica sounds next to asian sitar - and makes it work.

Just to let you know. I like it anyway.

"King Raam" is one of their weirdest things IMHO. "Page One", from their lemonjelly.ky EP collection, is as well, but it's also wonderful. :)

I was given a copy of a Lemon Jelly cd about a year ago by a guy at work after I gave him a copy of a Mike Oldfield album. I can't remember now if I gave him Amarok or MOTS but after listening to it he said to me that he thought I might like this band. I haven't played it in a little while but I did really like it as I like most stuff that is different from the norm. I don't know the name of the album he gave me, perhaps it is the one mentioned in this thread if anyone can confirm for me. The main thing I recall about it was a sample taken of a guitar lesson, telling people how to hold their fingers on the strings of the guitar. Will play it again and come back to this thread, cheers.

Gosh I use to be a big fan of the Chemical Brothers (and Fat Boy Slim) and I have 3 of their earlier albums but haven't followed them in recent years. Just from your description and my knowledge of the band, I KNOW I will LOVE this track. Off to seek it out now, thanks Toby.

Oh my Gosh, Yeh, I am going backwards reading this thread, how silly of me, but 'The Staunton Lick', that was the name of the Lemon Jelly track I spoke off in my previous post. Thanks again Toby. Which album is that on? I don't have the name of it.

Oh oh oh, and Four Tet. My ONLY knowledge of them is a collaboration he/they did with SIA on the most beautiful song in the world called 'Breathe Me' which was used in the final scene of the series '6 Feet Under' (the original version, not the Four Tet version). It was already my favourite song, but when they used it on this show which in the space of about 6 minutes showed every loved member of the series that I had been devotely watching for 5 years, drop dead, I bawled my bloody eyes out and now cannot listen to it without shedding a tear. Before I watched this final episode, the Four Tet version of this track was actually my favourite. I'll be checking him out too.

Gosh darn it, only yesterday I went to the Shopping Mall to spend a $150 voucher we got for Xmas, I couldn't think of any cds I wanted to buy, so I spent it all on dvd sets of fave TV series.
