TOBY brouhgt up this question in another topic and I have now written down a formal letter to Virgin and WEA. This is just an early version that needs to be fixed and rearranged. I just want to present the idea and se if any of you is willing to help me develop this letter and finally sign it in some way. Then we send it to Virgin and WEA. I think it is worth a try rather than just sit here and hope that a thing like this will be released.

Virgin Records

A DVD with all music videos ever made by Mike Oldfield!

Hello Sirs/Ms

As you may know Mike Oldfield will celebrate his 30th anniversary as a musician in May next year. Mike Oldfield himself has decided to celebrate this by re-recording the original Tubular Bells as he wanted it to sound from the very beginning. Fans around the world have a different idea and we will with this letter present that idea for you.

Mainly our wish is to by a DVD-video containing all music videos Mike Oldfield has ever done. He has recorded lots of them and they are almost never shown in public television. (need something better here to conect the things to each other) Some live clips from concerts would be nice too and of course a couple of statements from Mike Oldfield himself where he presents his thoughts of his carrier and the live concerts he has done.

I can not believe that releasing a DVD with the above requested content would be a problem. The videos are recorded and will probably need some re-mastering. That will of course cost a certain amount of money, but I really do think a DVD like this would sell really well. We are many fans around the world and look how well both the Tubular Bells II and III and The Millennium Bell VHS and DVD have sold. If a DVD like this would be produced we are more than happy to have it on all regions. Even region one which have been ignored with the two other DVD-releases.

To celebrate a 30th anniversary of an artist as big as Mike Oldfield me and all fans thinks it acquire a little more than just a re-recording of his first album.

Yours sinceraly

Thomas Höögh

With all other Mike Oldfield fans.
[I][B]

Pelase feedback and come with aprovements. It is better than just doing nothing. Maybe they will listen to us? :O

Nice one Thomas. The only other suggetion I would make is that we should emphasise 'with the co-operation of Mike Oldfield' himself. That way we may get an interview or even a behind the scenes look at Mike's studio, something interesting and different anyway.
With the creative potential of DVD it would be good if Mike got in on the act and contributed something interesting. Personaly I would like to see some unseen live footage and old interviews but that maybe a pipe dream. I've often thought Mike desrves a good documentary program made about him.

ps Just an afterthought. Maybe we should be targetting Mike's manager with this letter rather than the record company. It may just get ignored there. Perhaps Dark Star can help also.

Thanks for that TOBY :)

Just write what you want included and tell me where in the text it would fit best. Do you think the text have to be edited somewhere? I can not see that my first try would be that very good that it will do.

Good idea to send the letter to Mike Oldfields manager. But I do think we shall send it to all three of them. That would be the best. Once we have finnished the letter we can contact Dark Star to see if they can help us.

But where is the enthusiasm from everybody else in here???

I've just read in the Q+A section someone saying the reason there aren't many music DVD's generaly is that for the record companies they are reletively expensive to produce and take a lot of effort. If he's right then this may put a bit of a damper on the idea of Mike doing one. It does occur to me that possibly reletively few people outside the fanbase would be interested in watching old 80's Mike Oldfield video's.

I think for the record companies to take the idea seriously at all would require Mike to actually really think it was worth it and get involved from the outset and contribute something interesting. Knowing that Mike views a lot of his old video's as being a bit naff this may seem a bit unlikely.

The best thing I think we can do is encourage Mike and his team to put together a really interesting DVD package with lots of different things, live footage, interviews, behind the scenes stuff and any other interesting stuff they can think of as well as the old promos. Mike has said he's open to suggestion about the creative potential of his website and MVR so why not an interactive DVD?

I do really think we should target Mike and his team directly via Dark Star with this idea not the record company.
What does everybody else think?

It's a good idea, but I have already contacted Dark Star with a DVD-type request and heard nothing back - maybe my name was added to a list somewhere... I'd like the recent videos too especially Sentinel, Let There Be Light and To Be Free.

One point about the letter though, find out who it is you want to send it to; there is more chance of it being read with a name at the top rather than Dear Sir/ Ms. I speak as someone who has sent demos to record companies AND heard back from them. Even if it was a "this isn't the type of thing we are looking for at the moment."

The reason why I have written Dear sirs/Ms is because we do not know anybody at Virgin or WEA. But if we send it directly to Mike via Dark Star we will of course write Dear Mike and then according to standard you finnish the letter with "Yours faitfully"

I will try to rewrite the letter and include some of the suggestions you have come up with. I willpost it here later this evning if I get it finnished.

My point was to try to "blag" a name somehow; for instance, phoning Virgin pretending that you are a promotions company or something and finding out who you would talk to about Mike's back catalogue - especially regarding the remasters.

If you get a name on the letter then they are more likely to read it and, if the letter happens to get to the wrong person they might even forward it for us.

Ermmmm... strictly speaking, I suppose so, but in actuality it happens every day and I've seen it listed in books and magazines as a method to getting contact details for record companies.

I am not saying you should do this, I am saying you could do this.

I've e-mailed David Porter to suggest that 'Dark Star' put Mike's promos up for us to see.

maybe the number of signatures could give 'weight' to the words... so count on me to sign the letter  ;)

i think the content is right and about the form... maybe some words could be changed in the last paragraph... i'll think about it and then let u know...

The letter is almost finnished now. One question remains though. Who shall we send it to, the content in the letter refers to MO in third person, which means we can not send it directly to him. Does anyone know the name of Maikes manager? I need a name to put at the top of the letter.

The nice guys at Dark Star has promised me to forward this to atleast Mikes manager and maybe even Mike himself.

What we do about Virgin and WEA I do not know yet. Any ideas anybode?
