I was listening to Deep Purple's track 'Lazy' on my i-pod the other day while mowing the lawn. It occurred to me that it takes a long while on that track for the vocals to come in, so long in fact that you would be forgiven for thinking that it was an instrumental.

So what other tracks take an age for the vocals to start? An obvious answer is 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' by Pink Floyd, the vocals start at a massive 8 mins and 40 secs. I know because I timed it. Anyone know any other tracks like this?

The Cure has a couple like those. It was mostly a small "region" of their career, but there were many songs in which the vocals and lyrics were just a small piece of the song -- and that's surprising knowing how Robert Smith is known as a singer and lyricist. Check out The Kiss, If Only Tonight We Could Sleep, Plainsong, Fascination Street and Push.

Houses of the Holy by Zep takes a fair while for Plant to start singing.Again by Floyd Let There Be More Light takes a while and Echoes takes even longer.
Good thread.

Bauhaus' version of Brian Eno's "Third Uncle" springs to mind.

Also David Sylvain's "Taking the Veil" has a long, very Oldfield-esque build up and features Robert Fripp on guitar (go get íf you haven't heard it!).

Caravan's "Nine Feet Underground" has a long instrumental intro that is easily the best part of the the song.

Archive's Again, Lights, and Controlling Crowds tracks. (Have to be split on YouTube.) Sound like Pink Floyd in need of a diet and vitamins G.

Dunno if it counts (and how many people can sit through the preceding stuff)but Nurses Song With Elephants by David Bedford takes forever to get to the 'Nurses Song'.

Are you not thinking of Before The Bullfight from the same album Gone To Earth?..That said both tracks have great intros though I must admit.A friend of mine is a big Sylvian fan and we were talking about his solo work recently.Anyway as we were doing so he kind of dis-missed Gone To Earth as one of his weaker efforts, where as without doubt I would put it up there as one of his greatest achievments.

My two favourite Bowie songs have long intros: -

David Bowie - Station to Station

David Bowie - Stay

"Stay" has got a long extro as well - love it.

A ton of Renaissance songs. Can You Hear Me, Song For All Seasons, Mother Russia......but that was what they were all about I suppose.

Same with 'Sad And Lonely Faces', Kevin Ayers' contribution to that album...

What little Sylvian I've heard did indeed remind me of MO in a way, if a very 80s sort of way. Almost like a very 80s Mike who nonetheless hasn't lost his experimental edge. Again though, I really haven't heard much but I liked what I heard.

So long ago since I heard it. Taking the Veil has stuck in my mind (and onto one of my old mixtapes). I need to look into his other solo records.

This thread reminds of how much I love long intros (Station to Station is my favorite Bowie song). To some people Mike's music propably sounds like one long intro.

Oh, and here's another example:

Sisters of Mercy: Kiss
It's another on of those one chord "builders".

Several songs come to mind:

Neil Young - Cortez the Killer, in which a 3 and a half minute guitar intro takes up almost half the song.

Several Sigur Rós songs such as Heysátan and Viõrar Vel Til Loftárasa, plus track 1 from the () album. I love the long intros here; I think these songs are almost perfect musically.

Finally any number of Yes epics; Close to the Edge, Heart of the Sunrise, Yours is no Disgrace and so on. It's ironic then that one of my favourite Yes songs, The Revealing Science of God, starts off with one of the most lyrically dense and rapidly sung sections I've ever heard them do.

Good call I love that intro...There are about 3/4 tracks on Neil`s Ragged Glory album where the band play for about a minute/minute and a half before Neil starts to sing.He really knows how to set the mood that guy.

Funnily enough I was trying to think of a few Yes songs myself, and I guess perversely the first thing I thought of was The Revealing Science Of God heh heh..Heart Of The Sunrise is a good one though.

Talk Talk have some great long intros particularly on their later albums. The Rainbow from Spirit Of Eden springs to mind for me.
