MusicallyInspired Group: Musicians Posts: 1445 Joined: June 2001 Posted: Mar. 31 2004, 19:21 I have an opportunity to aquire the program Reason for the price of $200 USD. I'm just trying to do some homework on it and see if it's good. The guy who's offering it to me said it was more a keyboard controlled program and he didn't know how to play keyboard which is why he doesn't like it and has no use for it. I'm wondering if that means it's primarily MIDI-based. Since I work with live instruments too I don't know if that would be appropriate for me. He said it was $400 USD when he got it so I'd be getting it for half price. Just looking for some opinions. Maybe if someone could point me to a website with the specs on it. Reason is written by Propellerhead Software, if he's selling you M-Audio reason then it sounds to me like it's something he's got bundled with a soundcard, which may not be the full version. Whether it's worth the asking price is another matter - at Propellerhead's own online store, it's $499 US, so $200 for a cut down version might still not be a bad offer. But, their online shop isn't the cheapest place to get it, so you might want to look around and see what price you can get it for elsewhere before you decide. Back to top

You can though use audio recordings through the Rex device or the NN19 or NNXT sampler. But hey that's too complicated! I think for you would be a better choice to get Acid by Sonic Foundry or something like... But there's also a lot of plus for reason! it has unlimited ammount of sounds you can get out of it! There are 2 synths which make sounds by FM or granular synthesis, solid ammount of effects, samplers with great sounds in the factory banks...and so much moooooooore! -------------- http://www.djbooster.net Back to top

I knew Proppellerhead did it. I thought they were under M-audio or something. Just bad reasearch on my part. The version this guy has is the full one. Anyway, I think I've decided not to get it. It's works more for making electronic music and messing around with it to get it to sound Mike Oldfield-ish or rock or anything other than electronic would just be too much of a hassle. Thea Cochrane Group: Musicians Posts: 445 Joined: Nov. 1999 Posted: April 06 2004, 05:34 Be careful because some M-Audio units (their new Firewire ones especially) come with a cut-down version of Reason called Reason Adapted. I use (the full version of) Reason for a lot of my sequencing, sample-playing and synth work now but I also use another program that can do audio recording to record full tracks of guitars, vocals, real drums, etc. The best thing is that you can fill it with your own samples, grooves, program your own sounds on the synths and make it your own - and the effects are really good. Korgscrew Group: Super Admins Posts: 3511 Joined: Dec. 1999 Posted: April 07 2004, 10:58 I'm not sure I'd say that Logic is any more complex than Cubase or Sonar myself...they all have their plus and minus points, of course, but I think really they're all about the same. Logic is now only available for the Mac, since Apple bought Emagic a few years ago. I don't think the complexity is necessarily very important, though it depends on what you're doing. Back to top

My CPU jams up after listening to 10 seconds of those demos, and I wouldn't even try to compose using that CPU-hungry monster. I just currently use it for wacky special effects - the wacky music, wacky Chipmunk singing and wacky fake ADs are still made with MIDI and microphone. But Reason is very good, and very diverse. I know, it is kinda crap, really. Whenever I turn it on, it says my HD has gone berserk and can't find files, screw up, etc. I have to reset it once or twice to get it working. I think it's the memory chips.
