Hello to all.

Scenta.co.uk informs today that:

The Mail on Sunday today responded to musician Mike Oldfield's attack on its giveaway promotion of his album Tubular Bells by pointing out sales of the album rose 30% afterwards.

Complete article: Mail on Sunday hits back in Mike Oldfield row.

Greetings.

That newspaper is trash at it worst....it´s not about raising sales, it´s  about an artists integrity and they just don´t seem to understand that.

Oldfield - who announced before the MoS deal that he was moving his back catalogue to Universal - received undisclosed royalties from the deal.

Hmm....so money isn't everything then. It's difficult, do you want as many people as possible to hear your work? At the same time an artiste will want to control what happens to that work. So many complications. No doubt the contract Mike signed with Virgin (and since transferred to EMI) gave the record comapny certain rights as to what they could do.

Personally, if it was my record being given away, my emotional instinct would be negative, but then I'd be positive about it, the extra recognition and exposure, the extra cheque on it's way to the bank. Plus, add in the new book and new album. a little extra exposure can't hurt.

The answer is 42 - but what is the question?

I agree, and I think it's even more fundamental than you suggest. It's about the very basic issue of dealing decently and humanely with people - not just artists.

Yes, Mike will get some royalties from the deal with The Mail, but we know that won't be much, and it isn't really the point. What is so crass about this event is the sheer fact of dealing with a piece of art (which has become a musical icon for millions of people) in such a way as to show no respect for the man who created it. They knew perfectly well that the rights revert to him next year. They must surely know that the giveaway is bound to damage sales in the long term (for instance, some of the 2 million freebies will start appearing in quantities on eBay for 50p - maybe have done already; I haven't looked.) They must have known that Mike would be upset by it.

I'm 100% in support of Mike in this. It's no use excusing the action by saying 'but this is merely business'. We're human beings, not Ferengi. The fact that similar contemptible acts are done every day in the name of business and taken for granted by many people doesn't make them right.

I'd probably be pretty pleased if a media outlet wanted to promote and distribute one of my albums for free (and I'm not even bothered by whatever is "trash" and what isn't - we have representatives of the lowest kind of media, such as the Veja magazine), but not if it was all done behind my back. And in Mike's case, I can see how money isn't an issue - he could probably buy Microsoft if he wished. :D

I think in a previous post I did say this isn't really about the MoS its about the record company that signed the deal. The MoS is simply trying to boost sales so from their perspective I'd rather them think TB will do that if they didn't. So thats one positive. Mike got paid that's another. Previously it was not indicated whether or not he had been paid. And one final thought to add to my previous post.... what if this had been Amarok? An album that desperately needs people to hear it so its incredibly journey can be shared and appreciated to reveal his talent and show its not just TB that he produced... now that would be a good deal. I hope that can be given away some day in a similar deal. If I'd been the record company, I would have made the MoS give away both! Idiots!
