Okay, say you had won a prize in a competition to go backstage with Mike during his world tour (this all strictly hypothetical of course), what would you have to say to Mike?

Humourous contributions are welcome.

Hmm... I think I'd just have a cup of tea (or a Guinness wink) with him and not worry about what to say. After all, everything I want to know about him he has already told me - through his music.

Um... sorry if I spoiled the thread. After all, this was going to be a humorous topic, right?

I'd probably seem like a mental fan by giving him a great big hug, then i dont know what else. Just kinda take the conversation as it comes. Sounds boring, but meeting Mike.... wow! I would be full on speachless. Don't worry about talking, just stand and stare! lol. :p

I'd love to talk about science, psychology stuff and the other things he likes.
No music at all.
Wanna meet the person. Not just the artist.

I'd ask him to play a duet with me; we'd play Sentinel, me on grand piano, he on acoustic guitar. :)

I'd dare him. "Go ahead. Play TB1. All instruments at once. You did it for the record album, after all!"

I know that whatever my preplanned ideas might be, in the event they would all fly out of my head; and whatever else happened instead, the only important thing that I'd be determined to remember to say would be 'Thank you'.

Ask him stupid questions such as "have you heard this album called Tubular Bells?" until he sends you away. :/

It's only a thought.

A Few Really Bad Things to Say When Meeting Mike:

"So, did you ever do anything after that Exorcist deal?"

"That keyboard was pretty cool on the Exorcist theme. Have you ever considered playing guitar? You might be good at it if you tried."

"So, when are you and Andrew Ridgley going to have a WHAM reunion tour?"

"Don't come in again like that, it isn't funny, And I pay someone else to make the orchestration"

"I'd have listened to your music, but all I have to play things on is a tin box."

"Come on, you can tell me. What is the cheat code to get extra weapons in 'Maestro' ?"

"Cars or chaos?"

"I'm planning my next holiday. Could you let me know where that seashore is with the big bell hanging over it? I really want to go there."

"I represent the Butterfly Rights League, and wish to file a protest for your dipping a butterfly's wing in mercury in 'Platinum' "

"How can you sing with such a beautiful female voice on 'Moonlight Shadow'? You don't seem to sound like that in real life!"

"You idiot! 'Millenium Bell' came out a year early! The millenium really started Jan 1, 2001 !"

"Tubular Bells? That's, like a surfing album, right dude?"

"Whaddja think when that Gershwin dude ripped off one of your songs from 'Platinum' ? "

"Did you know that 'Tubular Bells' is nothing more than "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho'?"

"Is your song 'In the Air Tonight' really based on a guy who really let someone drown?"

"Are you still married to Sally Oldfield?"

"Do you know Posh Spice? I really want to get her autograph."

"Come on, tell me, what do the backwards lyrics in 'Taurus 3' really mean?"

Another one that appeared in an interview:

"You composed many songs with lyrics sung by Roger Chapman or Maggie Reilly. You asked different singers to perform them. Maybe you wanted to hide by them?"

This reminds me a little of some of one of the guys in a band I was in a while ago - he always tended to manage to say the wrong thing. His attempts at conversation with one rocker who had seen, shall we say, rather greater days of success, ended with him saying "So, what's it like being on the road again...you haven't toured since the 80s, have you?", to which came the reply "Actually, I toured last year...". He did't help things by asking if the guy found it hard getting gigs nowadays...

My tip for talking with famous people, if you're unsure of what to say, is to let them lead the conversation. Many will be as interested in you as you are in them. It depends on the context you're meeting them in, of course - if there are hundreds of people wanting their attention, and they want to go back to their hotel and go to sleep, they're obviously going to be less willing to spend hours in conversation with one person!
One reality which not everyone expects - even the most confident performers can come off stage with deep doubts about their performance. As they walk off, they'll be waiting for someone to tell them that it went ok, to dispel all the doubts in their heads about whether their performance was any good or not. It's nice to have people there who do that.

Absolutely!  My brother is terrible for always wanting to tell me how my performance could have been better.  He means to be helpful, but like I tell him - do the constructive criticism tomorrow, tonight I just want assurance that I didn't suck!  LOL.

Ho hum, that makes sense. But if I were to meet him, I'd probably go on babbling on about music - not HIS music, but music in general. That is, if I don't throw a fit and go "hey, do you like Talking Heads? What about Genesis? Do you remember Yes?" etc.

Or we can talk about the latest seasons of The Simpsons, and whether they're as good as they used to be.

And to close the conversation, of course: "Thanks a lot! I will play my favourite record of yours, tonight; 'Equinoxe'!"

I'd imagine he'd prefer some trekkie talk.  :)

Or motobikes stuff.
Or radio controlled helicopters' stuff.

I'd love to hear his point of view regarding science.AFAIK he likes it.

I'd get bored very quickly if I talked with him about anything else but music. :) And anyway I'd run away straight after ending my duet with him.  :D

I'd probably ask about how the new album was going. What ideas he's had, whether he's enjoying recording it and how he thinks it's coming on. That and let him know how much his music has meant to me over the years.
