This reminds me a little of some of one of the guys in a band I was in a while ago - he always tended to manage to say the wrong thing. His attempts at conversation with one rocker who had seen, shall we say, rather greater days of success, ended with him saying "So, what's it like being on the road again...you haven't toured since the 80s, have you?", to which came the reply "Actually, I toured last year...". He did't help things by asking if the guy found it hard getting gigs nowadays...
My tip for talking with famous people, if you're unsure of what to say, is to let them lead the conversation. Many will be as interested in you as you are in them. It depends on the context you're meeting them in, of course - if there are hundreds of people wanting their attention, and they want to go back to their hotel and go to sleep, they're obviously going to be less willing to spend hours in conversation with one person! One reality which not everyone expects - even the most confident performers can come off stage with deep doubts about their performance. As they walk off, they'll be waiting for someone to tell them that it went ok, to dispel all the doubts in their heads about whether their performance was any good or not. It's nice to have people there who do that.
