There's a program about an early version of a sampler - it should be of interest. It's on BBC Radio 4 at 10.30am today

10:30   Sampledelica: History of the Mellotron
Mark Radcliffe explores the history of the Mellotron, one of the quirkiest musical instruments of the 20th Century and one of the first samplers. Famously used on the opening of The Beatles' Strawberry Fields Forever, it was championed by musicians in the psychedelic and progressive rock eras.

Contributors include Sir Paul McCartney, Paul Weller, Tony Banks and Justin Haywood.

If this doc failed to mention Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues, than it isn't worth a penny. The man helped bulid them as a teenager and then popularized them through his brilliant work with the Moody Blues, before leaving after the 7th album. Every prog group from Crimson to Yes have Pinder to thank.
Justin Hayward, guitarist for the Moody Blues,  had little to do with the mellotron aside from being in the same group as Pinder.  It's important that lazy jounalists don't mislead or mis-inform the people because it can ultimately create a false history.
Thanks for posting the info.

Totally agree with you!!! I love that group and next month I'll see them live for the third time.

I always loved the out of tune sound of that mellotron. And I heard that at many things the damn thing would get broke, so they had to fix it, so that the concerts would sometimes start very very late!!!

Unfortunately he's not in the band anymore, but they do use the mellotron sound.
I thought it was weird too, that they would interview Justin Hayward about it. He did play it on some songs, just as he did have a mini moog, while Mike had the big one.

I'm very curious about that programme, so I might try to find some things about it on youtube... or whatever...  :)
