Heaven's Open can be translated to "The Contract with the New Label is Open", since it's Mike's last album with Virgin. The four first songs potray his psychotic relationship with Richard Branson, and the title track is him entering in a new era of his carreer. 'Music From The Balcony' is his last laugh and last "Fuck off".

Discovery, Islands, Earth Moving, I don't know if these have a general meaning. I think the songs are just collections of thoughts and ideas about life. Mike was very good with potraying states of mind through lyrics (at least in Discovery era). Islands and Earth Moving were very commercially-oriented, but it seems some tracks on Earth Moving were inspired by his kids (Holy, Innocent) and by Mike Tyson (Runaway Son).

Amarok = be yourself and make what's on your mind.

I've never been good at finding meanings in lyrics beyond the painfully obvious. At This topic you will find a very original meaning for Heaven's Open. I'm not sure whether I agree or not but it is quite interesting.

Obviously Five Miles Out is about flying, Hergest Ridge is about living in Hergest Ridge in England. Songs of Distant Earth is based on the Arthur C. Clarke book of the same name. Islands, Discovery, Crises and Earth Moving are a bit more difficult. I really have no idea.

..and I guess most of QE2 is about travelling. Not only at sea, a bit everywhere... in places as far apart as Ireland and Africa... :)

Interesting, I never really got that feeling from it... not even from the title track. But then, I couldn't really say what feeling I get from QE2 either... probably just a sort of "QE2" feeling  :D

I think that Five Miles Out is a mix of flying experiences and lullabies because of the birth of Dougal.

Crises is really an interesting question. I've always felt the title track happy despite the lyrics but the ending is quite weird. It's the beginning with distortion... Moonlight Shadow has a very balladistic, sad story, In High Places is about balloons, Foreign Affair perhaps about flying again. I suspect Taurus 3 is only about music, Shadow On The Wall is questionable again to me (maybe compunction?).

Crises casts a very nightish mood. VERY nightish. Fits the cover very well. The title track has wonderful visions of night and dawn, Moonlight Shadow needs no comments, In High Places chants about the moon and the stars and sounds nightish, too, Shadow On The Wall... well, too. It is definitely a night album.

Five Miles Out sounds very afternoon-y. Orabidoo, especially. I imagine clouds coloured yellow by the sun... great imagery. Side B is really very good.
