The move has also sparked debate about giving albums away free with newspapers, with particular focus being on Tubular Bells. Retailers have insisted it has affected genuine sales of the classic album. Thanks, Chris Simmons. Update May 22: The Mail on Sunday replies that sales of Tubular Bells have increased 30%, while music industry sources believe that 30% is actually not significant. Back to top

I realise it is a bit cheeky asking someone to break copyright to see an article about copyright but if anyone has a subscription to Musicweek I would really like to know a bit more about what Mike has said. Anyone? onion Group: Members Posts: 104 Joined: July 2005 Posted: May 09 2007, 06:00 There is many aspects (no sure of spelling) of this...of course it´s wrong to give away a diamant, but it could also just mean that MO is angry because he doesn´t want to be associated with the newspaper and anyway I fully support that he is pissed off. I think it's horrific that music companies can just do what they want with classic CDs without even consulting the artist. I will spare you the details but It's massively annoying when your publisher or former publisher does these things with out simply letting you know.. It's just the decent thing to do. If my publisher had asked me if it was ok, I would have said "Yeah, no problem!" but to find out through other means that they'd simply taken the liberty to just do it without letting me know felt upsetting. It's just the decent thing to do is to comunicate with the musician first hand. I can understand Mike's frustration - It's a principle thing more than anything. Back to top

They generally go in more for "various-artist" compilations or samplers, don't they? I wonder if Mike would have been less angry if they'd've given away a "Best Of Mike Oldfield" Compilation (comprised of Moonlight Shadow, Foreign affair, Mike's Single etc.) I also wonder whether the Mail's decision to give away the whole of TB was based on their perception of it as a bit of a "lame-duck" album, and that therefore they could get away with it without too many recriminations. Personally, hearing that the Mail was planning to give it away free with their poxy rag triggered the same feelings within me that I feel whenever I see it in the Bargain-Bin in HMV - anger and frustration and the suspicion that people see it as a bit of a joke! But... since the mail have gotten into the habit of covermounting classic albums on their newspapers, I'm looking forward to seeing them giving away The Beatles' White Album, Nirvana's Nevermind, and Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon with future editions...  Will it happen? A lot of Folks who never in a Month of Sundays go near a Record Shop may have played it Liked it!! Then maybe thought ill go and down and get a "Elements" CD from HMV or Virgin ... Not sure how much Royalty you get off a CD Album these Days but as we all know u can get Classic Albums in the £3 - £5 Category these days so that could be a form of Devaluement as well I guess.. Maybe MO will still get a Slice of the Cake I guess but hes just a bit Miffed cause no one happened to consult him 1st Back to top

I was in HMV in Belfast here about three weeks ago, and tubular bells was in a huge poster on the wall, entitled "the most important albums you must hear before you die" some stores have respect. when i heard they gave away Tubular Bells free in the paper i was actually embarrased. I had a few freidns call me up and say, "oh hey i got that tubular bells albun for free, would you like it?" i dont really pay much attention to the media anymore (thanks to studying media for two years) but as soon as i heard this, i felt really bad. The audio is quite distorted but you can hear it at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/arts/frontrow/ It's about 19 minutes in. I'd argue that anyone who wanted to buy Tubular Bells would probably have bought it in the last 33 years already, and people who don't like it won't like it but it might turn lots of people on to Mike's other CDs. But... yeah, not checking with the artist/ composer is a bit crap. Back to top
