In this weeks Music Week, Mike attacks EMI for giving away Tubular Bells as a covermount without having consulted him first. The move has also sparked debate about giving albums away free with newspapers, with particular focus being on Tubular Bells. Retailers have insisted it has affected genuine sales of the classic album.

Thanks, Chris Simmons.

Update May 22: The Mail on Sunday replies that sales of Tubular Bells have increased 30%, while music industry sources believe that 30% is actually not significant.

They did it *without consulting him*! That is absolutely horrific.

The Music week item seems to be subscriber only. Anyone care to paste a copy of the item here at tubular.net ar a more detailed summary of what Mike said?

...and I thought that Mike knew about it,TB given for free as a promo tool for his autobio!

But it wasn't...and I do support Mike's anger on the subject.

There is an opinion poll on www.musicweek.com where you can vote to support Mike's anger (it's on a panel on the left of the main page)

You can vote without being a subscriber but I still haven't found a way to see what Mike wrote (£15 seems a lot to view one article). I realise it is a bit cheeky asking someone to break copyright to see an article about copyright but if anyone has a subscription to Musicweek I would really like to know a bit more about what Mike has said. Anyone?

If I had poured my soul into a work of art which had been a huge success and of which I was enormously proud I know I would be livid if someone went and distributed it free with a paper without my consent!

There is many aspects (no sure of spelling) of this...of course it´s wrong to give away a diamant, but it could also just mean that MO is angry because he doesn´t want to be associated with the newspaper and anyway I fully support that he is pissed off. It devaluate his work - any artists work -  and is wrong.

Mike

You would be better off just buying the magazine (this weeks issue) as it includes a picture of mike, the article, plus his letter of condemnation. It's available in most newsagents, for about £4-5.

Will try again to find a copy of the magazine. I didn't have any luck when looking in newsagents yesterday evening. Plenty of copies of "hello", "zoo", "football daily" etc. etc. etc. of course...

He should consult a lawyer if he hasn't done so already.  If the paper gets away with it, I worry that other papers will start using this as another way to get people to buy their publication.

Well I voted to agree with Mike on this matter (as have over 80% of voters). I think it's horrific that music companies can just do what they want with classic CDs without even consulting the artist. It's this kind of treatment that has bugged Mike throughout his career and I hope it doesn't get to him too much now :-(

He's dead right to feel angry. It happened to me but in a slightly different way. I will spare you the details but It's massively annoying when your publisher or former publisher does these things with out simply letting you know.. It's just the decent thing to do. If my publisher had asked me if it was ok, I would have said "Yeah, no problem!" but to find out through other means that they'd simply taken the liberty to just do it without letting me know felt upsetting. It's just the decent thing to do is to comunicate with the musician first hand.

I can understand Mike's frustration - It's a principle thing more than anything.

That's the main point,IMO,in Mike's case,TB means a lot to him,not only musically but personally.

It's interesting that the Mail chose to covermount a complete album. They generally go in more for "various-artist" compilations or samplers, don't they? I wonder if Mike would have been less angry if they'd've given away a "Best Of Mike Oldfield" Compilation (comprised of Moonlight Shadow, Foreign affair, Mike's Single etc.)

I also wonder whether the Mail's decision to give away the whole of TB was based on their perception of it as a bit of a "lame-duck" album, and that therefore they could get away with it without too many recriminations. Personally, hearing that the Mail was planning to give it away free with their poxy rag triggered the same feelings within me that I feel whenever I see it in the Bargain-Bin in HMV - anger and frustration and the suspicion that people see it as a bit of a joke! :(

But... since the mail have gotten into the habit of covermounting classic albums on their newspapers, I'm looking forward to seeing them giving away The Beatles' White Album, Nirvana's Nevermind, and Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon with future editions...  Will it happen? I think not! :(

Giving it away is a Two Edged Sword I guess!! A lot of Folks who never in a Month of Sundays go near a Record Shop may have played it Liked it!! Then maybe thought ill go and down and get a "Elements" CD from HMV or Virgin ... Not sure how much Royalty you get off a CD Album these Days but as we all know u can get Classic Albums in the £3 - £5 Category these days so that could be a form of Devaluement as well I guess.. Maybe MO will still get a Slice of the Cake I guess but hes just a bit Miffed cause no one happened to consult him 1st :D

I was in HMV in Belfast here about three weeks ago, and tubular bells was in a huge poster on the wall, entitled

"the most important albums you must hear before you die"

some stores have respect. when i heard they gave away Tubular Bells free in the paper i was actually embarrased. I had a few freidns call me up and say, "oh hey i got that tubular bells albun for free, would you like it?"

i dont really pay much attention to the media anymore (thanks to studying media for two years) but as soon as i heard this, i felt really bad. I really wish some people had more respect for music.

They discussed the article on the BBC Radio 4 programme Front Row last night. The audio is quite distorted but you can hear it at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/arts/frontrow/

It's about 19 minutes in.

I'd argue that anyone who wanted to buy Tubular Bells would probably have bought it in the last 33 years already, and people who don't like it won't like it but it might turn lots of people on to Mike's other CDs.

But... yeah, not checking with the artist/ composer is a bit crap.

Mike is absolutely right about attacking EMI which I suppose is not a Virgin any more but It turned out to be a whore! ( sorry for strong language but it simply pisses me off when the commercialism is killing the real spirit of music and its trully deserved respect! ) :(
Keep it up Mike!

I don't see what's commercial about giving it away for free.

You know it's like in those super markets, they give you something for free just in order to focus your attention on something else ( i suppose the Changeling) I think they were surely aware of 'general noise' in public they will cause. And not consulting Mike was particulary intented.
I think it might turn lots of people perceiving Mike as being a free newspapers add..  :/

Or maybe I am just exaggerating.
