I've just been watching the video of "Wind Chimes". Does look a bit dated (though I still love it :) ) but it started me thinking. Mike could do *sooooo* much with modern technology to do something similar but chooses not to. You can say the same about various things he's done beginning with the multi tracking in TB. I almost get the feeling part of his interest in the projects he's done was tackling the technology to do new things. The challenge seems to be part of the appeal. Once the technology had matured it was too easy! MusicVR you could say the same. Would be so much easier for him to do a similar project now but he doesn't, he did it when it was *hard*.

Is it just me who is seeing a pattern here? So, what would be *hard* for him to do now that would whet his appetite?????

I really agree with you. I have also thought about it. I think not only is it about the technology either, he also really clearly shows inspiration from contemporary music (as evident on Platinum and TB3 for example), and still manages to have a timeless quality to the music. You can clearly hear on every album from approximate which time it is (and not only by sound quality).

You learn so many skills when you decide to get *hard* - I'm sure he enjoys the full process!

You might want to rephrase that, Tati

Ha ha

What I wanted to say is that he has more fun when nobody has done it before, while he learns new skills related to it,that's it...maybe my PhD is consuming some neurons,LOL.

I like his music the best when it required lot of efforts from him (e.g. multitrack in 1973, browsing lot of samples for TSODE, get Moonlight Shadow exactly right, etc.) Not sure if the trick is to use the latest technology per se or to put efforts into it for whatever reason (most of the time because the technology is not quite there I guess).
The contrary with Vangelis, the more lazy he is, the more I like.

I don't like his videos and games. It might be complex for him but I feel like it would be easy for somebody else, that's it's not his thing. I doesn't make much sense to try complex things in a domain that's not really for you.

I remember reading somewhere Pink Floyd criticizing Jean-Michel Jarre for using cheap visual effects. And they are probably right, Jarre has a good visual sense, contrary to Mike, so it would be cool to see him try to do complex stuff.

It would be cool if he woke up with an "ah-ha" moment one morning--an idea that would be challenging to him and innovative.  There is always new ground to be broken, but my poor brain can't visualize anything atm.

He was years ahead with MVR (maybe even ahead of Linden Lab), but now many have surpassed MVR, e.g., the immersive musical experiences in such virtual environments as Second Life, Inworldz, or ReactionGrid. It could have been very cool for him to have developed a Mike Oldfield spot in Second Life, for instance, where musicians came together and collaborated across time zones, synchronously. Where he streamed sometimes. At this point, he'd need to find a way to incorporate augmented reality, gesture-based computing, etc. to be on the bleeding edge with music-technology.

My computer won't run Second Life properly,Inkanta - that's why I haven't been along to greet you and your pet bass.  :)

Well, nightspore, any time your computer is ready, I'd be happy to link you with the librarians who host the book talks inworld. SL no longer offers an educational discount, so some of us are off investigating other platforms. At this point in bandwidth time, we cannot use SL widely for work (continuing education programs, for instance) because of the technological and bandwidth requirements--our rural locations just aren't there yet, despite Obama's broadband initiatives. I'm not inworld very much anymore (hey, learning the bass and going to gigs takes up my free time, hahaha) but still have ties.
