There was talk about Mike playing the Fairlight with the punk band The Skids on their album "Juna"  or something? Has anyone ever heard this?? I'm trying to find a mp3 or something, no luck though.

Mike played the Fairlight on the Skids album Joy. On the track called Iona. Details and a scan of the cover are available on my website (http://www.dbennett.karoo.net/Info/Joy%20Info.html and  http://www.dbennett.karoo.net/Discography.html). Unfortunately I don't own that album and I haven't heard it.

Maybe this is what you were thinking about. I have never heard anything about Mike on an album called Juna.

Thanks!!

I mixed the name in my head. I couldn't remember the title so I said "Juna", but it was "Joy" and "Iona", so... :)

Mike did indeed play on the track Iona by the Skids. I heard it once a long time ago, can't really remember much about it. The late Stuart Adamson was guitarist for the Skids before leaving to form Big Country in 1982. Big Country were famed fot their bagpipe guitar sound which characterised their songs, sort of connection with Mike there, also I think Mickey Simmonds was good friends with them, sort of connection with Mike there also.

I've got some vague notion that the Skids were pissed off with Mike for charging a huge amount to use his studio, does Sean Moraghan's MO biography not refer to that? I may be confusing that with something else.

I've got it! Mike plays his famous Fairlight sounds on the song, like the bass "Evacuation" sound and the bagpipe sound. I really love them, Mike plays it beautifully!

I actually like the song. I thought "ugh, punk", but it's not so punky. Actually a slow and bit quiet song.

If you like it then I suggest getting hold of the first album by Big Country entitled 'The Crossing' you can usualy pick the CD up cheaply and its very, very good. Infact any of the first 3 Big Country albums are good, well worth checking out ('The Crossing', 'Steeltown' and  'Seer). They took bagpipe guitar playing to a level beyond Mike's wildest dreams.
