It's been mention briefly in other threads, but I couldn't find them with the "search" function, so I thought I'd start a new thread.

There is a site last.fm which keeps a record of any music you play through the main media players (winamp, windows media etc). It seems safe enough, but the cool thing is to see how the world listens to Mike's music. The site can give statistic, and here are few as of my posting time:

33,153 individuals have listened to a Mike track. The most popular is Moonlight Shadow, at 7,253 plays. What's interesting is that the next most popular (Shadow on the Wall) is only on 2,863. I can understand MS, it's on many compilations, but where the heck did SotW come from?

As a comparison, 112,932 individuals have played a Sigur Ros track, and Hippipola has been played 17,318 times this week.

Also surprising is that there are 3 tracks from the Guitars album in the top 20. Well, it's surprising to me 'cos I don't personally rate that album at all. Poor old Nightshade is only on 444 plays (but i think Tati will be adding to that).

Anyway, I've had fun using the site, and recommend it to you.

Found this through Jon Collins' blog(Mike's collaborator on the autobio),and I'm having fun with it.Of course,I'll help Nightshade to have better results.

Nice to see what's on other people's musicplayer...my page is here - http://www.last.fm/user/tatisentinel/

Yes, last FM is great.  I'm at http://www.last.fm/user/captainjjb/
My recent interest in all things MO will be reflected big time in my charts this week (due later today)
I did a post here recently complaining about the lack of MO users, although there are some good journals to read (one about Hergest Ridge for example).  I've got a group for the over 40's at http://www.last.fm/group/Life%2Bbegins%2Bat%2B40

/dougmac21

Im ranked amoung the top MO fans which is nice, but i believe that the play counts that Olrac refers to are not actually so. I believe that they represent the number of lastfm users who have played the song, rather than the global play count.

Well, last.fm is not the entire world, but I guess it has enough subscribers to give a reasonably fair representation of the music-playing public.

So, how does a relatively new band like sigur ros gain such a huge following and regular plays by a wide audience, when Mike doesn't?

I guess we can all agree that Mike is a better composer and musician. So is it image or publicity? Word of mouth? I can't say I've seen much, if any, main stream publicity for sigur, but I have had e-mails and seen many forum posts around the net mentioning them. From a ska based site, to a NASA forum and even here. Mike doesn't get that virus-type action.

How can we elevate Mike back to his rightful status? Many "older" artistes have seen thier careers boosted by word of mouth, gone through the treadmill and finally realised commercial success.

Sigur Ros are more popular amoung the post-rock type loving nerdy and geeky males of a certain age who are the main bulk of the lastfm subscribers, I myself listen to them (primarily on cd or vinyl rather than on the compuer admittedly).

Lastfms user demographic ultimately decides what is most popular, and the fact that what people listen to off their computers isnt taken into consideration is also a factor.

I like to use the service to have details on my personal listening, I'm honestly not really interested in using it as some sort of tool to garner wider support for MO amoung its userbase.

Where am i rambling to with this post? Dont know.
