I occasionally use a community called MySpace, and I was surprised to be asked by Mike to be added as his friend! I'm guessing it's been set up as some marketing thing, 'cos his MySpace homepage has the Night of the Proms tour dates.

Still, it's nice to be his friend.  :D

Mike's MySpace page

How can we guarantee it's authenticity though?

It looks authentic to me... but to be honest -- I don't know for SURE. Most of artists' MySpaces are authentic, though. Mine sure is ;)

In Keane's case their MySpace page is related to the record company. The one that OracUK showed me seems to be *real*...

It's most often easy to find out which ones are real and which aren't; it's most difficult with the ones that don't give much information. Keane have a "luxury" MySpace, with a special version of the player. Consequently, it's... a bit... well I'd say it's against what MySpace seemed originally to be, i.e. a place where -- in theory -- you can become "friends" with, well, real people, even if some of these people are famous. If you look at Keane's MySpace... well, it's nothing -- NOTHING more than a promotional tool.

Snif. Well, I think Mike isn't big enough commercially ATM to have a representative doing his page, so maybe... just maybe... it's him, there, sending out requests. Hi Mike!

Hmm... It's interesting to see people like Jean Michel Jarre and Robert Miles as Mike's friends. :)

There are multiple accounts for most reasonably well-known musicians, except Steve Hillage. I started a profile for him so that fans could add his tracks to their profiles if they wanted to but previously couldn't :)

Oh.

I guess that means it's possible to disable signatures :)

It's at www.myspace.com/raygrantmusic and I was actually joking -- I wasn't aware it IS possible to disable signatures here... :) They're no hassle here, but there are forums where people put like 1 MB of pictures into each signature...

Mike, could you please put into your official website a link to this myspace in order to verify that it is really yours? Thanks  :)

I've been asked my Mike to be his friend as well so, I suppose it's not really him ;)

It's easy to see for example, some "small" bands are running their pages, like Wobbler, or Anekdoten I guess... But the big ones, I'm not sure at...

By the way, I have added some of you, so if you hear about Magmor... Don't worry :)

It looks fairly real: well designed, up-to-date news, etc. Compare it to http://www.myspace.com/mikeoldfield which is obviously not him.

However, I think he was in a hurry (if it is him) when he entered the profile:

Heh - thanks or the adds and invites...I guess the latest Mike space is for real, but whether or not it is actually Mike playing with it, the answer may be in his choice of friends. Would a fan add so many Trekkie links?

Like the good techno-freak that Mike is, he'll discover a new site and dive right in, then get bored/distracted and move on. That's how I was with my Space anyway.
