'On the first day of Christmas Mike Oldfield gave to me...'

So do you think the time is ripe?
All I have right now is 'Silent Night' and 'In Dulci Jubilo' but how beautiful they are, it isn't much to fill the season.

So how about a fully instrumental new age/easy listening/chillout/whatever Christmas album next year?

Imagine Mike playing:

- Deck the hall...
- Feliz Navidad
- Little drummer boy
- Oh Holy Night
- Twelve days of Christmas
- etc. etc.

In store November 2004!

This year, it was the Moody Blues' turn. Next year, it's Mike Oldfield's turn! December Bells 2004 - with double copy-protection! :D

JOKEY REPLY :D

Hundreds & hundreds of people had already done that stuff - I don't think that Mike [especially the presently-a-little-bit-lazy incarnation of Mike... :)] could add anything really exceptional to it. I'd rather see he try his hand at the Christmas-carols style in general rather than focus on particular titles, by composing ten-or-so originals - I don't really care if they're instrumental or sung. :)

"the presently-a-little-bit-lazy incarnation of Mike..."

I agree with you, Ugo, that's why I saved him the trouble of composing something new.
Sure, it's doesn't really ad a thing to his musical career. So what?
The last few days people on this forum have been discussing his lack of musical skills. If that is so than I have a bad taste in music.
I just happen to like his style....

And if hundreds and hundreds of artists have done so before him, than why not Mike?

Well, I guess Ugo put "JOKEY REPLY" on top of his post just to avoid such reply. ;)

Maybe so, but within this context his words can be treated serious as long as they contribute to this discussion, and I think they do.

To be honest I would prefer a completely new composed album that satisfies most of us.
We are a small group of people, a little less than over a thousand, who come over here on a regular basis and discuss Mike's music.
If he was to make his fortune based on what he sold to us he'd still be poor, believe me.
Nevertheless some of us believe we can actually steer his musical direction. Based on what?
But we try anyway...

There are even some who believe that Mike was at his height in the eighties. May I remind you that was the same time when he made an album such as 'QE 2', for a large part based on what other people suggested him?
I guess that's why I made this suggestion of a Christmas album.

All the man needs is one brilliant idea.
(And, yes I know, this one is not it)

IMHO Mike doesn't even lack the tip of a toenail of his talents as a musician, and there's TB 2003 to prove that. But he seems to be, as I said above, a little bit lazy - his attitude sounds to me like "Why should I compose something new when I can just revamp my old stuff and be appreciated in the same way?" :D :D  Anyway, yes, I think that a new idea, be it from him or from anyone else, could really bring him back to his top form. REALLY. :)

P.S. I had put JOKEY REPLY on top of my message above because I thought the topic was jokey - I've just realized that it's far more serious than I initially thought. ;)

Where is all this lazy crap coming from?.He is making another MRV type game, the second one,who else is doing that?,whats lazy about that,we all know that Mike writes, records, makes music all the time,so,it's not lazy, and i don't see anyone else hear making music that gets released around the world,so have some respect please!!!!.

Yeah I think Lazy is the wrong word to describe Mike, to put it mildly. Tired sounding perhaps but Lazy, no way. He's quite amazingly prolific and industrious is our old Mike.
I wouldn't mind the idea of a covers album by him by him if I thought it a) wasn't going to be too cheesy (a Christmas album smells of cheese if you ask me) and b) was going to be a lot better done than Voyager was. I mean the fact that some of the covers on Voyager were so utterly trite and unimaginative makes me think he should just stick to arranging his own compositions because at least then you don't have anything to compare them against.

I have faith in Mike yet, I think he will deliver another great album. Its obvious that after 30 or more years or writing music he's going to need a new direction for his imagination and if writing music for computer games is that new direction than so be it, as long as the music's good I don't care what its for.

:D  I get the feeling this is going somewhere...

OK so maybe lazy isn't the right word to describe a man who still is very active.

Don't get me wrong. I too like the idea of Mike being very imaginative but you have to admit that hasn't been always the case.
And true , his covers don't always match the originals.

In creating the MVR's he's living his fantasy, and if we like it or not doesn't change a thing to the fact that he's making something new here.
As to qjamesfloyd's question who else is making an MVR I can say that at least I am trying to. It's still far from finished and may not be of the same quality, but it's what I like to do. And in doing so I can imagine Mike having fun in realising these games.

But we're moving away from the subject:
- would you accept more rehashed albums
- would you like your favorite musician turn into a game developer
- would you accept a Christmas album or some other uninspired thingy

For how sorry I am I bet my stakes it's going to be more of these in the future...

I'm glad for you UGO that you are trying to make your own MVR type of thing.
But there is no way at all is Mike going to release a christmas album,i'm sure he would have done it by now,but he did release a christmas EP,and i think there was only one christmas tune on there, that being In Dulci Jubilo!!.

I think I'd enter a major disagreement on here, because I definitely think Mike is acting very lazy these days. What's it worth putting out a hundred half-arsed albums? I don't think he needs to put too much effort on that. Come on, we all know he's a great musician already, I don't need any Tres Lunas or Guitars. He can do stuff better than that in his sleep. If he wants to go on making his computer games, fine, but he should stop acting like he was the best musician ever.

One last remark...

Out now (and probably a few weeks): 'The Jethro Tull Christmas Album'.

Ian Anderson in Uncut magazine, Januari edition:
'I'm really not one for jingle bells and dreaming of a white Christmas. I find all that a bit tacky. All that stuff like Slade is seriously kind of, well, VOMIT! My record company suggested The Jethro Tull Christmas Album concept to me last december, expecting me to say no, but I agreed. There's definately some pieces of music on there that you'd carve the turkey to, but it's not cheesy, it's meant as an alternative.'
