Hy,

So what is your opinion? Is Mike rather a musician or a composer? Or both? And which dominates most of the time? And why?
Some people say that he have never been a professional guitarist, he just has reaaly powerful tracks...I do not really agreee with them, maybe I'm just too young... ;)

Well I have been a fan since his first album and followed each album through the years with antisipation.

I dont really care if he is mainly composer or musician or best guitarist, as long as he can keep creating the magic of his music and the effect it has on me    :)

Cheers MO fan  :D

I think that now he's more like a composer who plays...
at the beginning of his career he was a player who composed, i.e., as he puts it, "I didn't think, back then. I just played".

For me there's a huge difference between the two. :)

When you get to a place where Mike is,i would say that there is nothing between composer and musician,he is clearly both, because he excells at both,a composer will use the tools available to him,and Mike uses instruments to that end,and in doing so that makes him also a musician, the other way to look at it is Eric Clapton is a musician, but not really thought of as a composer,Roger Waters is a composer and not really thought of as a musician,Mark Knopfler is like Mike,a composer and musician!!!!

Ian Anderson (of Jethro Tull) once said, "I've never been a 'real' musician. I can't play any Beatles songs or classical pieces. All I can do is play my own music. Peter-John Vettese [keyboarder on some 80s Tull albums], to me, is a 'real' musician: he can play any song you ask him for." (Quoting from memory.)
I think a lot of that can be applied to Mike as well. Of course he can play some classical pieces (and I guess so can Anderson), and really I guess what Anderson meant to say is that he is not someone who spends a lot of time practicing such stuff, in order to become a 'real' or 'professional' musician. Much in the same way, all Mike can really do is to be Mike (although yes, he did some more or less succesful attempts at emulating certain styles...).
I'd probably see him more as a composer who performs his own music.

If I had to chose, I would say composer. But he's clearly both. There is not many I would put in the both category, but Mark Knopfler is definately one of them.

He is a composer.

Mainly because, most of the time he doesn't structure his pieces as a showcase for his skill's on one specific instrument. well okay, there was "Mirage", but I did say "most of the time".

He certainly restrains himself from preening "look at me, I can play guitar" solos more than many other guitarists.

Mike Oldfield is a composer, that is clear.

Beethoven, Mozart or Bach were virtuosos on keyboards, and Gustav Mahler was the greatest conductor of his time, but nobody calls them musicians or conductors. They wrote their's own music - same as Oldfield, so he is a composer ofcourse.

I think Mike Oldfield is a musician and a composer. Moreso a composer, though.

I want to understand your definition of "musician". In my mind, every composer is a musician, but not every musician is a composer. Are you saying "musician" as in "performer"?
