the cover of Vinyl single "Mistake" says :

"MISTAKE"

Mike Oldfield Band

so why was it labeled as MO band and not as Mike Oldfield as on other singles from this time like "family man" or "Five miles out"?

There was a point round about 82-83 where Mike's touring band was known as the 'Mike Oldfield Group', I've seen T shirts with this writen on them from that time. Presumably the writing collaboration's on Five Miles Out were thought successful enough for Mike to start referring to himself under a group name, however the idea obviously didn't last long as the name and indeed the group writing collaborations ended with Crises.

Yes, it was led by Mike's wishes to be 'just a member of a normal band' (to paraphrase somewhat). I suppose the use of the name 'Mike Oldfield Band' was intended as a step further in that direction.

I don't really think it's part of his personality though - which would be why, as Toby noted, things changed somewhat when it came to recording Crises. He doesn't really appear happy if he's not across everything, if not actually doing everything.

I can remember reading an article from around 1974/75 from Melody Maker or NME quoting "Mike Oldfield forms band". So this must have been one of his long held wishes.

I must have that article somewhere in my archives.
