To me Mike Oldfield has always been and will always be primarily a guitarist. The fact that sometimes he prefers to concentrate more on composition and less on guitar-playing is, obviously, entirely his own choice, but this IMHO doesn't make him any lesser a guitarist than he is. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Michael Angelo Batio... or, in another field, Pat Metheny... these are all musicians who compose their own music. Yet do people think of them as composers? Nope. Moby has always written every single note he has played and sang [except for the bits he sampled, of course! ], yet do people think of Moby as a composer? Nope.
