Hi there,

I'm using Garageband for my music, which for most part could probably be described as a sort of 'Mike Oldfield meets Steve Roach'-kind of thing...

Please visit my Tube for a listen: My YouTube page

Just added two tracks, but there are more to follow (some still in demostage). I'd like to know what you think...!

"Palm Drive" is a good desert island chill-out sound  :).

Nice chill out - shame about the artificial guitar effect on Palm Drive, I think it would really soar with a real one.

Not sure the bass sounds in Shades of Dawn fit well with the rest - they seem a bit obtrusive.

That's all just my 2 cents though....

My wife was listening at the same time and said that Palm Drive sounded like a gentle camel ride. She's been on a camel so I guess she would know!!! She meant it as a compliment but I don't think it fits with the implied subject of a drive down a palm laden avenue. :)

I'm rambling now... sorry!

Overall, good chill tracks - thanks for sharing!

Cheers,
Terry.

Your wife is perfectly right (I've also been on a camel-safari once). Maybe I should retitle it 'Camel Drive' :D
No seriously: everyone makes up his or her own images while listening to music; maybe my titles are a bit too descriptive...

I will look into the bass-sounds on Shades of Dawn, maybe you're right.

Thanks to all for the nice feedback! Soon I will upload some new tracks.

Just uploaded a new track to my Tube, 'Out of Time':
My YouTube Page

It started out as a variation on the last bit of 'Shades of Dawn', but it developed into something quite different. It's very filmmusic-like, especially the second half (not chill-out at all!;).

Very nice!  I'd make the piano sound a bit less 'plinky-plonky' if I were you, though.  Otherwise, lovely.

Playing those parts fluently would go at the cost of the 'stress-factor' of the track. Still, I could give it a try of course...

In the meantime, I've uploaded two more tracks, quite different from the last ones. Purely melodic pieces, not atmospheric really:

Maybe you just need to add a bit of reverb at the start?

Sorry for not posting so long but times have been too busy...

@smillsoid: Is adding reverb possible in GarageBand? And if so:how?

In the meantime I managed to finish a new song, 'The Two of Us', inspired by the beautiful movie 'Let the right one in':

Hope you like this one too!

Very nice; on "the two of us" track I'd compress a little more the guitar track as sometimes, just a handful and all of them at the beginning, it goes up in volume to the point of being unpleasant. Other than that the mix is spot on to my ears.

The melodies are lovely, if anything on this track I'd steer towards a much bigger sounding ending; no need to do much (lots done already on the change in 2:40), I think introducing a nice warm slow bassline in that spot would make it massive, both in sound and in drive and groove.

This also should give you room to elongate the track as I also think it's too short, plenty of ideas there that can be developed further.

Also it's always a good thing to add small variations every few bars, it helps avoiding the listener losing interest. Not necessarily on the melody only, but maybe slightly modifying the perc pattern, or adding some background stuff that comes and goes. This is something I constantly have to battle with as I produce purely electronic music.

Listening again to it I'd deffo add a bassline on the change at 2.40 :) :)

Thankyou Nabla for your elaborate comments! You've got some good advice there; I will take this track back to the drawing board soon!

Just oploaded a new version of 'The Two of Us', incorporating most of your comments. Especially the bassline at 2.20 is an improvement I think...

Yeah man, deffo much better, the bass chunks up the crap out of it and makes it so much bigger. Long bass notes, sounds good, also the new section at the end is just brilliant.

Two lil details, the first guitar coming, is it panned slightly right?

On the bass, I'd give it a few more ms attack and eq out some of the high end (diff to say without having a poke but think around 1khz or so) and push its volume up 2 or 3 db, but this is just nitpicking now :)

Nice one dude.

Thanks, Nabla.

The first guitar is on the right indeed, the second on the left. Because of the idea/emotion behind the song it's important that the guitars communicate with each other - hence the pans to left and right.

Your comments are very professional, where can I find some of your music? I'd really like to hear some of your work.

Yeah I totally understand the need for panning considering there's a same-instrument dialogue. How about pan the initial guitar center only when it's doing solo, then pan right when the other one kicks in? That way the mix will be a wee bit more balanced IMO.

You can check some of my older stuff on my myspace but unless you are into banging underground electronica you're set for some disappointment haha. Here's a lo quality version of one of the latest I've done:

Although I'm not into 'banging underground' I'm not disappointed at all by hearing your work. Okay, it's not my cup of thea but it sounds very professional, very well produced. I like 'Toro' the most, well done!
