Does anyone remember a Radio One series from the 1980's hosted by Mike Read in which musicians popped in and chose their top 10 songs (A parody of Desert Island Discs)  I know that Mike included -Masquerade by the Skids, -Astronomy Domine-Pink Floyd, Amazing Grace-Royal Scots Dragoon Band, and tracks by Steve Miller Band and, Spirit. If anyone remembers the details of this programme approximately 60 minutes long, I would love to know. Some of his choices will have changed a lot since that year.

Check out the bottom of this page.

Don't have the exact details to hand (they are on another computer, I think) but your memory of the songs he had seems about right.

I hate most of those songs! Especially "All right now". Surely the creator of TB2 and Amarok and TSODE was joking with this list??

Maybe that's just how MO was feeling on the day. I know myself I could never compile a list like that. There are a few songs that are and always remain favourites but the rest of my list would keep changing depending on how I felt at the time.

Really awesome that such a list exists. I'm currently listening to all the music. Some bands I haven't heard of, like Skids.

Why, Oh why is a punk song on No1 when Mike was against punk?

Yes, great find Chris and Airborne!

Think I like a lot of those songs. I don't know the Billy Holiday one.

Oh yes I do - just had a look.

"Don't know why, there's no sun up in the sky
Stormy weather, since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time..."

Interesting! Was it a change of heart and Mike did like that song or was it his sense of humour appearing again :D

Matt - yes, The Skids may be Mike's humour. They're not bad.

Two of those titles are albums -

The Family That Plays Together - Spirit

Sailor - The Steve Millor Band.

I'm a big fan of The Police so very chuffed that he likes "Can't Stand Losing You."

I'm pretty sure Iona was the first song I heard that I knew was by The Skids.  On the radio, quite liking it and no idea that they were punk, or post-punk or whatever and if anyone playing it commented on who the guest keyboardist was, it might not have sunk in anyway - we're still a few years away from my Damascus moment.  I see now that they were on Virgin and spent time recording at The Manor after Mike's main time, so he may have met them socially.  And he tried recording with Hazel O'Connor, didn't he? Most punks seemed to adapt out of the stereotyped phase - I remember a review in Smash Hits around this time commenting on why the appearance of strings on The Damned's Strawbs wasn't any more unexpected than the recent no. 1 from former member Captain Sensible, with a song from South Pacific!

Hey, altogether: -

"I see you've sent my letters back
And my LP records and they're all scratched
I can't see the point in another day
When nobody listens to a word I say
You can call it lack of confidence
But to carry on living doesn't make no sense...."

I bet his list is almost completely different now....mine can change with mood, let alone 28 years or so....some good songs there, but I dont see any influences in Mikes music...lol

I'm surprised "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" wasn't on the list.

I would hazard a guess that Amazing Grace will still be in his Desert Island Discs, and Free All Right Now probably would be on the ship too. I never ever believed that I would love an album more than Ommadawn until 2001 Bjork Vespertine arrived, even then I gave it five years or so until I had to concede that it was my No.1

Yes, I think you could be right. Expect those words in the hymn must have resonated, to the extent he wanted to use them in 1999 for "Sunlight Shining Through Cloud".
