Sorry Tubeman  :p   english is  my 3rd language so I´m not sure I read your post correctly, and I´m sorry if it´s wrong, but I don´t see it as a poll but merely suggestions for a top 10..

So I provide mine top 10 (in no order, since I couldn´t make one top at the list)

1. ommadawn   - I totally agree
2. ommadawn 2 - agree
3. far above the clouds - again agree, and whatever the show was, it´s amazing hearing MO going bonkers with the guitar  :D  - also the reprise in horseguard parade is mad as hell.
4. Far country - again agree, very beautiful
5. Five miles out >live< from viaggreio in 1983 - amazing
6. Platinum (north star finale) >live<  from the album "the complete" disc 2  - just about 9 min. in.
7. Millenium Bell >live< - just about the end...MO is playing so damn fast and the orchestra is fighting to keep up   :O
8. Magic touch
9. Crises - the beginning of the "2nd. half" - 9.58 min. in
10. To France - the extended version

Have to work on a full 10 but here are some of my favorites (in no particular order).

Tricks of the Light
Blue Night
Far Country
Shine
Magic Touch

I am trying to stick to what I would think of as a traditional "guitar solo" rather than bits like Ambient Guitars which, while superb, are a mix of lots of different guitar parts. Also, these are not necessarily by favorite *songs* just my favorite *guitar solos*.

I'll try and complete and order a full "top 10" after more thought...

i must agree that Earth moving is full of great solo guitars!! Also "No dream" from Heavens open is great. It is close to "Surfing".
The same sound and great emotions and feelings.
I agree that Ambient guitars is a mix of lots of different guitar parts. Solo or not, it is great anyway, and it is some of the best guitar moments from Mike.  :)

Well, Kay, you've got me a little bit off-guard here because I love Mike's music more for his skills as a multi-instrumentalist than as a guitarist. :) However, here are my ten, in no particular order:

Amarok: "Fastest" waltz
Amarok: Ending climax
Serpent Dream
Turtle Island
Red Dawn [I just love Mike's acoustic stuff! :cool:]
Heaven's Open [Yes, there are guitar solos in there! :D]
Ommadawn: "Diddlydiddly" solo just before the drums-&-vocal finale of Part 1 starts [I'm too lazy to find a time reference, sorry! :D].
Far Above the Clouds
Pictures in the Dark
Branches (from Sallyangie bonus disc)

Overall, I'm no fan of guitar solos. It all depends on how well incorporated it is into the song, so it's a bit hard to say. But here goes nothing, anyway. In no particular order:

- Tubular Bells side 2, before Sailor's Hornpipe section;
- North Star, "Platinum Finale";
- No Dream (I like how the guitar phrasing gets progressively denser as the music goes);
- Moonlight Shadow (of course - the proverbially perfect pop solo);
- Incantations, part 3 (very lengthy and carefully developed)

um... yeah.

- Ommadawn, Part One - the finalé is mindblowing
- Ommadawn, Part Two - the guitar just before On Horseback is great - possibly my favourite
- Taurus 1 - The guitars in the last two minutes are lovely with the emotional peaks, and the piano in the background just adds to the atmosphere of a life of tranquility
- Taurus 3 - I love this track, I always feel like I'm on a beach in the Pacific or something when I hear this one
- The Bell - I love the closing guitar chords at the end of this piece, even though it's only acoustic guitar, it is so lovely and gentle
- Man In The Rain - The instrumental near the end is fantastic, so emotionally charged and full of undertones of sorrow and longing

All I can think of for now. I'll try to think of some more later.

I don't think I'm qualified to make a list, since there are so many pieces I've yet to hear. But I was struck by SoimSandheaver's comment regarding acoustic guitar. It reminded me that I've been very impressed with some of MO's acoustic guitar playing. I'm curious... is the general consensus that MO is better with electric than acoustic?

Serpent is close to my top 10 list..
But i think the solo in Inner child is better. That song is full of emotions and crying, it is just superb.

Someone mention Taurus 3, and i must agree. It is lovely! It is like beeing down in the mediterranean sea...  :zzz:

My favourites:

1. Shine: the most cheerful and playful one :)
2. Altered State: it's great how the two guitars play different but entirely harmonic melodies and reach the same end
3. Far Above the Clouds: melodically simple but very emotional - especially the live version from the premiere concert where Mike almost tore his strings ;)
4. No Dream: very powerful, but I'd listen to it longer
5. Ascension: going higher and higher and higher...
6. Ommadawn Part 1 floating solo at the middle
7. Amarok Lion Reprise (36:43)
8. Man in the Rain: long and diversified solo, some months ago I heard it in radio and then I realized how great it is
9. Incantations Part 4 middle guitar solo
10. Magic Touch: interesting technically and also structurally, going high, low and high again, in a non-obvious way

And I'd give the Strangest Guitar Solo Award to Gimme Back. :D

I'm finding it hard to compile a list of favourite solos but what I'm certain is Far Above the Clouds (Reprise) from the premier in HGP as well as Shadow on the Wall from Viareggio in 1984 were some of the best live solos ever. Anyone care to put up a list of favourite live solos?  :p

6- Shine (John Andersson sings, and the guitar does it too. And it's also a so lovely tune! ^^)

7- Moonlight Shadow (Here: OMG!!! MOONLIGHT SHADOW!! I just was unable to stop repeating it over and over)

8- Serpent Dream (On the TB III Premiere. So much power on it!! *-*)

9- Tricks of the Light (Fast, clear sound, presice *-*. It's Mike Oldfield)

I would say his best guitar work is on QE2, and the track QE2 itself has some fantastic playing!

I also believe that Platinum live at montreaux - during part two i think is awesome - i dont really rate ommadawn or TBiii's guitar playing too much, i dont know, but im not so sure that its his best, lots of emotion yes, but hes played more intracately for me. ;)
