Hello all out there!:)

Does anyone know if Mike ever has played the main drums himself on a track ?
On "Crises" I know he´s playing Simmonds drums on the first half.

Thanks in advance

Cheers,

Fredrik

To my knowledge he'd never played a proper kit on of his albums (excpetion for Crises then?). He's played the Bodhran though.
It's usually these departments where he needs outside help - wind instruments and drums. Lately Mike's samplers has been doing all the work. :-(

A drummer is also exactly what Mike needs IMO. Simon Philips input on Discovery was great. Imagine that album with stiff boom-krasch machine drums from the Fairlight instead of Simon's precise but inspired playing. Wouldn't have been the same thing.

Thanks. :)

Yes, Mike has played varoius percussion instruments during the years, such as
Timpani, Syndrums, Claptrap, African drums ( on QE2 album)
and Vibraphone, Marimba, bodhran, and glockenspiel, plus Tubular Bells on others.

So if he can handle that, in my opinion - he probably could handle drums as well.

There is no doubt Mike can play drums, but not to a confident standard for his albums, and when Simon Phillips was around, there would be no contest. But, i really don't have a problem with Mike using a drum machine, to me when people go on about him using a drum machine instead of a real drummer, it's yet another example of people being picky, i'm sure when people make there own music at home, and don't have real drums, they would use a machine!!!.

I have nothing against drum machines generally, but I'm sure Mike could afford to have the genuine article. But if you like acoustic drums or not is a matter of taste of course.

Well, I would certainly prefer a good drummer over a machine every day. I'm not saying that drum machines necessarily sound bad, and I can see there might be reasons why a very regular, repeated drum pattern may be wanted, but a drummer like Simon Phillips can add an awful lot to an album (Crises, for example).

If you ask me, what Mike needs is a new "groop"!

That's just what I thought. Well and if he doesn't want a group anymore maybe he could still collaborate with a drummer. That would have turned L&S from a nice album into a very good album. (imagine Resolution being played on real drums! ooohh!! :D )
On the other hand, would he have used real drums on Distant Earth, then that would not have been a very good choice!

Yeah and if had used real drums on L+S, then people would then go on about using real singers, or real this and real that, Mike choose not to use them, and you have to respect it, you don't have to agree with it, but you must respect it.

First of all, it's not of my business if Mike uses a drum machine or a real drummer. It's not my decision - so I don't see the how it would matter if I respect Mike's decision or not. What do you mean with "respect" anyway?  :/
