Turns out that this is in the FAQ at Amadian

http://www.amadian.net/faq.htm

"6.5 I've seen the book 'Born In The UK' by Mike Oldfield. Is it by the Mike Oldfield?

No. The author Mike Oldfield is a music journalist. I think he works / worked on the NME (a very anti-MO organization). He has also written other books, one of them about Bruce Springsteen."

--------
What makes this more confusing is the prominent "Virgin" on the cover of the book seen on eBay... considering "our" Mike Oldfield's strong association with that company. Does anyone know which Mike Oldfield "hit the scene" first? You'd think that the second one in would have had the decency to use a slightly different version of the name (first name Michael, always use middle name, etc).

I remember seeing this book in a charity shop in about 1991 and buying it feeling very confused. Not only is it published by virgin but the girl on the front cover of the softback book I purchased bared a weird resemblance to Maggie Reilly. I did try to read it, It was real pulp fiction crap but I was convinced at the time that it was indeed writen by Mike

Thank god it wasn't

My brother (also a MO fan - the bloke who introduced me to Mike's music, in fact...) made the exact same mistake, and in fact, when I spotted it on his bookshelf a few years ago, so did I - given Mike's penchant for dabbling in all sorts of different media (Videos, MusicVR etc) it didn't surprise me at all to think he'd written a book! I agree, though - it was a load of garbage - ghostwritten by Jeffrey Archer, no doubt...

Tony :)

P.S. - You're not my brother, by any chance, TOBY, hiding behind an assumed name, are you? :p
