There have been some memorable moments where Mike really let loose on guitar. My favourites were in TB Edinburgh in Altered States, the bit following the Royal Dragoon Guards. TB at Horse Guards Parade was another one. Deb

Hi Nightspore the guitar solo in Celt was pretty kick a..... Mike really made his guitars sing, rock, and soar! I watch DVDS to study his technique and am always blown away by how fast he played and with precision! I love all those pics where he is obviously really enjoying himself and earning the respect and awe of the crowd! Deb

Are we talking about studio or live here? Well, I'll list both.

Studio: the movement in TB 1973 called "Caveman" in the 2003 version, the fast solo from Ommadawn Part I, "Lion Reprise" and "Fast Waltz" from Amarok, "Altered State", "Maya Gold", "Outcast", "Serpent Dream", "Far Above the Clouds" and, yes, "Celt".

Live: all of the TBIII pieces I listed above from the HGP performance and from the Jools Holland show, plus "Punkadiddle" from the Montreaux 1981 DVD and "Art in Heaven" from the eponymous show.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall at the Manor when Mike was playing the "caveman" piece. Now that would blow cobwebs from the rafters LOL! Mike's raw energy on TB might have been fueled by angst, but what a stress buster! You would have to feel pretty good after playing like that! Deb

Hmmm lets see.

Live:Any version of TB part 2.Particuarly like the version on Montreux where he does the Bagpipe theme.
The searing solo at the end of Live Punkadiddle
The Horseguards Parade version of FATC.His most intense
     playing in years.

Studio:Ommadawn (all of it but the solos at the end of both sides in particular)
         First Excursion
         The Phaecian Games
          The Sirens
Stars End (end solo side 1)
          Instructions For Angels
          Whatevershebringswesing
          Shine
The solo(s) at the end side 2 of OTB
            Far Above The Cloud

Too much more to list.....

Oh and of course The Caveman Song.I'd have loved to have been there too.I had a DVD player that allowed the pitch of anything played on it to be raised without speeding it up.I upped the pitch on The Caveman song to around twice the standard to get an idea of what it would have sounded like with Mike screaming (as you know the tape was sped up when it was recorded so the Caveman sounded lower when played back at normal speed).Sure enough there was a young man screaming his head off!
The guitar playing on it's something else too.Funnily enough i have most of what's available with Mike on it pre TB and the only solo i've found with that much anger in it is Lunatics Lament from Shooting At The Moon.18 years old with real teeth!Check it out.

Can`t really dis-agree with anything here, trying to think of a few more...

The long solo from Incantations Part 3
The two climactic bursts from Incantations 4
Mirage towards the end
Overhead guitar during the "banjo section" of Taurus 1
The transitional section between Platinum Part 2 and Charleston
Solo from Man In The Rain

Hmm...think my favourites would be...

Studio: End of Ommadawn Side 2, fast solo on side 1, Incantations Part 3.

Live:Tubular Bells Side 2, Live at Knebworth, Tubular Bells "blues" section from Montreux, Ommadawn Live in Hannover 1981 (just after intro when full band comes in)

Speaking of vocals there was that amazing female vocal in Inner Child at HGP. It reminds me of the vocal in Gig In The Sky by Pink Floyd. Both spine tingling! At the end of Serpent Dream (I think) Mike made that loud ooouuuuuhhh..... Really gave me goose bumps. The encore of FABC at HGP was one of the best I have ever seen. Mike was in control, master of his guitar and the crowd were on their feet clapping and singing even while the rain poured down. Hope he remembers how good it felt at times and makes him smile. Id love to think he might think "yeah I was pretty good" but he is so nonchalant about his guitar playing. But still the master IMO. Deb

This answer is lazy because it's getting late and I go to bed after this and don't want to list them all.

I always enjoyed the solo in the song Discovery.

Deb i don't think anyone with Mike guitar skills could ever not know he's good.If the guitar magazines ask for an interview every few years then that should be proof enough i would have thought. He knows he's good! The problem i think is that he doesn't feel the need to prove anything anymore. He's probably right but i know most of us here would love to hear him plug that PRS or strat (i think the days of the Gibsons are gone mores the pity)and just roar on it.
I don't know if it's just me but the raw emotion of his playing has really taken a back seat in recent years.Call it age or something else but i'd dearly love to hear that old style Oldfield guitar playing in something new and not just another re-issue or re-working of TB.Come on Mike. You still have it in you somewhere!!!

meanwhile i'm really looking forward to recieving my copy of The Mathmaticians Air Display. From the bits i've heard it's got lots of great playing on it.

I also forgot to mention the brilliant guitar playing on QE2 (the track).Beautifully played with razor sharp timing and tone.Aaah those were the days

It's interesting that in a thread devoted to favourite guitar work no one has chosen a piece from Guitars. So I will: "Summit Day".

Good point. My choice would be Four Winds with the emphasis on West.Captures that feeling of long lazy summer days perfectly!

About Guitars, Muse is quite something. it feels like a sudden inspiration, and I think is one of the few guitar-only song he did. The only other I remember is at the end of Orabidoo, accompanied by a female singer.

Mmmm, Caveman, like you and many of us here I would love Mike to "get a little crazy and blow the dust of the PRS and a STRAT" the only way Mike knows! Loud and proud! Ok he might have to escape to the studio to do it, but I reckon it would re energise him. Too much sun and surf and being a good dad have softened him up. A good thing but to see him play wild again....now that would be something. Deb

My favourite is the guitar solo in "Celt".

True! I don't care much for the song itself (sounds filler-ish!), but the guitar solo is sensational.

I watched the Berlin concert DVD for the first time in ages last night. The track Art In Heaven has some really nice playing on it.You can tell it's cold.Mike looks freezing up there all dressed up in a scarf. And he makes a fair few fluffs throughout the concert so his hands must have been very cold!
