I've been wondering this morning that certain Mike albums evoke a certain time of the day, or certain moments of the day beg for certain Mike albums. I'm trying to make a list of albums that somehow fit with moments of the day. Here's what I came up with:

Morning: Ommadawn - the intro sounds like waking up, and it becomes sunny and warm very soon.

Mid-day: Tubular Bells - Intense light and heat emanate from this allbum.

Afternoon: QE2 - Very relaxed, light and fun.

Early evening: Amarok - Imagine the sunset as you hear distant calls of "Sondela uSomandla etc."

Twilight: The Songs Of Distant Earth - No comments here.

Night: Crises - Easily one of the (if not the) most "nightish" albums in Mike's catalogue.

That was my list. Anyone thinks of other possibilities?

I imagine the moon rising at the beginning of Incantations. Tubular Bells is nicely suited to a rainy afternoon, Hergest Ridge a summer's evening, perhaps...

Amarok around the clock maybe?

Incantations is definately a snowy afternoon in mid-winter piece of music for me. Ommadawn, a sunny afternoon in August and TB a warm summers night in July. Ahh... that brings back memories.

(The original) Hergest Ridge has always sounded to me like a description of a quiet spring day in the countryside which is suddenly upset by a thunderstorm, and, when it is over, the peaceful feeling returns with a very fitting and splendidly melodious conclusion. Of course I had already heard all of this in a 1800s piece of music by a certain Ludwig...  :p

I'm jokin', of course. I'm neither comparing Mike to Beethoven, nor HR to the Pastoral Symphony, but it seems to me that both pieces really evoke the same images, at least in my own mind.

As for the others, I agree with all of Sir Mustapha's attributions; I'd add some parts of Taurus II to the early evening section, because it seems somewhat fitting to me... [Don't ask me why, please. :D]
