I mean this in a musical sense (I am sure there are other things!;)

For me it's these~

-melody  always original & of it's own time

-the way little bits get repeated throughout the music (is it  called a theme? I am not musical)

-the art work for the albums are always fascinating and good to look at ( ah   Ommadawn!!;)

-Piano,beautiful, beautiful flowing piano (Top of the Morning and lots of others)

-Guitar when it's played with passion, I like the angry bits v. much (the live version of Tubular Bells on the Elements DVD and on Guitars B.Blues & Out of Mind & so many more elsewhere!!;) Oh and the Flamenco /Spanish bits in Amarok for example

But most of all it's how, in the longer compositions he makes the music progress. Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn, Incantations and Amarok. (the only one that doesn't do this for me is Music from the Balcony, even though it is good, it's just different). I absolutely adore the way things move on...as if you turn a corner and are in a different world each time and yet the whole thing stays connected and you are never lost. After listening to any of the albums I just listed, I feel  I have been somewhere. It's a little surreal if you like. Very, very clever. And true artistic genius.

Just my thoughts, what are yours?  :D

His longer pieces of music are great, I agree. He makes it all sound as a "whole", though with very different styles in the same piece of music.

The piano in 'Lament for Atlantis' is excellent. As is the electric guitar every time he uses it. His overall talent is amazing.

Tough question!! I could practically write a novel on this subject, but I'll just try to keep it simple.

* The guitar. I've said before he's my favourite guitarist of all. I just find so much feeling in so many of the things he plays.

* The melodies. Not just the melodies themselves, but the way he uses them so effectively. I'm thinking especially of Amarok here.

* The way he's always trying different things, never standing still in his music. Sometimes, when you don't like his new direction, it can be frustrating, but for me Mike makes good music a lot more often than he makes bad music.

I think those are the main ones for me.

I think what Mike does best is create passion, whether it is through his guitar playing or piano playing or his melodies, it all has so much passion. I especially love the more angry or energetic pieces.

I often wonder if I would see his music differently if I knew nothing about him as a man, because I feel influenced by knowing that he has had a traumatic childhood and arguements with the devil in his adult life. They say all genius comes from suffering and I do think his personal life has helped him to be more expressive, or maybe he just spent more time in his room on his quitar than the average person who would rather be out with friends. He was obviously very shy.

But to be more specific, his bestest bits, Amarok, TB and SODE. Ommadawn, HR and Incantations, everything without songs.

Tracy.

a) His ability to construct a lengthy piece of music where themes blend into one another, and reappear and take off at tangents - somebody from the world of "rock" who can manage long compositions that are neither 1) boring nor 2) overly bombastic is so refreshing, and Mike is so good at it.

b) His ability to play lots of instruments well, and also choose gifted collaborators like Paddy Moloney or Leslie Penning, to play the instruments that are beyond him.

a) his ability to make me playing my air guitar
b) his ability to create melodies I'm humming unconciously under the shower
c) his ability to make me feel guilty when I break Amarok in the middle
d) his ability to send shivers down my spine when hearing TSODE while looking at the night sky
e) creating music for even the most pathetic fans like me ;-)

Mike, what's up with Quicksilver ?

Watching the news is ...

I agree, Belle, that his music creates passion and that's what I love most about the man.  His music inspires me, motivates me, brings tears to my eyes.  But, I've been listening to his music since 1973 and just recently discovered his background.  I had no knowledge of his traumatic past, so I'm not sure that you would feel any different.

And yes, the angry pieces - I love to hear his voice screaming.  Right now my favorite line is "TAKE IT AWAY" from Platinum.
