Ok guys there have been lots of funny moments, esp when Mike has been interviewed (his least favourite thing). Can you remember the times when Mike upped the ante on pushy journos? Or just plain funny anecdotes by the Master of a million ha ha ha ho ho hums? Love how he goes 'aha' 'mm Il have to think about that' and 'why? Why are you asking about that?' He has copped a bit but given heaps too. Lets hear some of those funny moments.

My favorite quote EVER from Mike:

"I'd like to see more variety, honesty, creativity, uniqueness, not everybody just following each other like sheep."

He was right Tati, not many musicians are as honest or intelligent as Mike. He is the thinking persons musician. I love another quote "the mark of a good musician is to play one note and mean it" which is comforting for me, still learning to play!

I remember reading somewhere about a journalist that had an encounter with Mike in a dressing room after a show ca 1979 (the exposed tour) and failed to get one single world out of him. Mike just kept staring at the poor journo. Like Syd Barrett behaviour but without valid explanations like mental illness or drugs.
At least that's more funny than the average Mike Oldfield interview where he talks about how he hates music (his own and that of others) and how he hates people. Not surprising that Mike even views himself as one of the un-funniest people alive. I think it was in one of the recent interviews where he described how he makes other people uneasy when he enters a room.
I bet there are lots of funny anecdotes about Mike, but they won't come from himself. I don't think he can see the funny side of it himself.
There is one really funny episode in Richard Branson's self-bio about Mike's 24 hour marriage (ca 1978?).

The best i ever heard was when being interviewed by (i think) NME in the early 80's.When i asked what he dislikes he replied "I probably hate your decripit magazine more than anything else!".Great reply.
He has given some really good interviews. One i really like is by Carl Dallas shortly after Excegesis. It's called Year Of The Expanding Man and it's in the articles section. It's during the period when Mike was accepting interview requests from everyone who asked.Mike's clearly taking the piss and being deliberately vague.I've heard reports from other people who interviewed him around the same time. One described him as going through 'a snotty adolecense'.Sound about right.

"This is the Year of the Expanding Man...."

Which in turns makes me wonder if it's the man or the piano sequence that is repetetive?

I will let you in on a secret, much to Mike's chagrin. HE HAS GOT A WICKED SENSE OF HUMOUR! He can laugh so hard he falls off a chair! The grumpy, disagreeable persona hides the prankster that loves staring down journos. He has to make things a little less boring. After all the interviews he has given it would be "oh dear not another one, drives me f.......bananas!"

When did Mike start the "staring" thing? Was it after that spooky therapy thing? I reckon there was a transfer of sorts. They obviously brainwashed him, took his sense of humour and turned him into a cynic. Those "cults" can cause major personality disorders through the power of suggestion! He was never evil even though he thought he was! "another kick in the teeth, another hit to the head" MIKE WE LOVE YOU, JUST BE YOURSELF.

Read Changeling asap...there are lots of bits where Mike does show his sense of humour.

Can`t think of anything specific off the top of my head, but I`d agree that Mike undoutably has a pretty dry sense of humour. There`s humour a plenty in his music sometimes as well which I think should`nt go un-noted.Plus for every awkward/not in the mood type interview, there have been many where he`s come over very amiable to me.His recent radio interview with Radcliffe & Maconie for instance is just one example where he seemed in very good spirits. And he has the ability to laugh at himself at times as well, which is absolutely crucial imo.He does`nt suffer fools though, and he does`nt like being rubbed up the wrong way,..oooer missus.I think maybe sometimes he has the paronia detector turned up a little too high. But you know given some of his experiences with the press down the years, that`s probably understandable to an extent.A good interviewer would know all that from the start though ,and you would think they would then conduct themselves accordingly. But then sometimes I think all they really want is the "moody/awkward" interview anyway.

Yesterday was my bi-annual review at work with my manager. We talked for about 40 minutes or so,and I would say at least half of that was kind of awkward really.Despite the fact we get on well enough in as much as we need to,and my appraisal was pretty glowing by and large. To have to do that kind of thing with complete strangers, who may or may not have your best interests at heart anyway...I don`t know I think you`ve got to be a certain kind of personality to do it well, and to do it with great charm and ease on a regular basis I guess.Yeah Mike could just refuse to do interviews point blank, but from time to time he does do some good ones it has to be said. His track record`s probably better than mine anyway.

Come to think of it though I've never seen on video or heard one of those "not in the mood" type interviews. We have transcripts, and the interviewers' word for it, but it's always been obvious to me that Mike's sense of humour is a big part of his personality.

When Mike says that he hates music, only has lawyer friends and that his kids live in another world...  he might say it with a straight face, but I'd like to see the video, he's probably not being literal, or even feeling unhappy. Looks to me very much like dry humour. As an example, with Tati's interview the transcript reads - "I'm sort of lightly soiled" -  on paper that can translate in many ways!

My criticism of Mike around the time of the Q and Mojo interviews was rooted around the fact that he hadn't openly stepped in to sort out the "Ultimate Edition" problems, and to be honest I didn't have a lot of time for what he had to say then, whether or not he was joking. Anyway, the problem got sorted, and as we move swiftly on to the next re-issues, all is forgiven - though not forgotten ;).

When TBII came out, Mike chatted with Ray Cokes on MTV. It was funny and at the end he taught Cokes to play the guitar. They played Taurus 3.

Hi Tati I did my homework, and yes lots of incidences of tongue in cheek humour! You have interviewed him lucky girl! To Dirk, Wiga, Harmono yes there are reasons why Mike was was portrayed as being distant from his children, hating music etc. Rule no. 1 never ask Mike personal questions about his family, its rude and an invasion of privacy. Rule no. 2 don't assume what has been written has not been taken out of context and Rule no. 3 yes he has lawyers to stop greedy record companies from ripping him off. Those last 2 interviews I now disregard. The magazines make money by exploiting him and don't really have his interests at heart. Roll on April, can't wait.

I can't always make out if you're being tongue in cheek - need a video or sound link for verification :).

Hi Wiga I do sometimes have a dry sense of humour. I really admire Tati, I found interviews she has done with Mike, and he was happy, relaxed and not a grump at all. The magazine articles do not amount to anything in the large scheme of things. I reckon Mike just wants to get on with his life without the media wanting his pound of flesh. I think its fair enough. Besides he would be chuckling away in the studio at the moment having a bit of fun with all those demos!
