Hi guys....

I have just found this link on a Spanish blog.

http://fannyoldfield.zenfolio.com/p86870574/h1e36cbd8#h1e36cbd8

I think these hands belong to our favourite musician...

:)

Thank you Dani...

Of course it's Mike's hands...and he has now a red Telecaster to have fun

I have often noticed that Mike keeps a long nail on the thumb of his left hand.

Whoopee! They're Mike's and that's the tele Fanny mentioned!Interestingly with a big fat Seymour Duncan humbucker in the neck position (ok nerd moment i know),but this says to me big fat guitar tone.Usually the tele, for non guitar nerds, has a little skinny pick up here which gives a nice round but fairly thin tone.Think Tubular Bells in particular the section between the Caveman and The Sailors Hornpipe or the bit immediately before the guitar and organ duet on side 2.Stick a humbucker in the same position (after some fun with a router to make space)and think Exposed TB Part 2 solo.
 Now i'm really getting excited about a new album.New guitars,new tones.Cool.
Oh and about the thumb nail.I used to think it was for playing the harp as he has always kept it long as far back as Ommadawn but he hasn't done that for a long time,at least on record.I keep mine short cos it gets in the way if i have to play chords using the left thumb  (although the right one is kept fairly long). So i really don't unless he has some technique that involves the thumb nail.

He cant pick his nose with his right hand, it would gum up the  strings.
Would turn Ommadawn into OhmyGod
:p

Even when he was younger, his hands were some sort of chubby...

;) ... do you know that Mike is a guitarist ? his fingers are not "chubby" but only muscled that's all ! I already noticed in some old pics that Mike is always doing exercises with his hands like crushing a ball when he is on holiday just to muscle his fingers..

Look at Steve Howe's hands...he's also a guitarist like Mike but his fingers are not muscled neither chubby, just thin

What I do care is what those hands are capable of doing with any guitar around.

I might be wrong here but AFAIK we indeed have no muscles in our fingers other than the thumb at its base. Rather, they're connected by tendons to muscles in our forearms - an easy way of checking this out is by grabbing one of your forearms and flexing one of your fingers, you will notice the muscles flexing there.

Very true.I don't think the thickness of the fingers has anything to do with it.The tendons have to be fairly strong to bend the strings but a lot of the stregnth is in the wrist (no smutty comments you dirty minded sods-you know who you are)anyway.
Look at the old blues players. Some of those guys had fingers like sausages.I'm thinking about people like Albert King or BB.No-one can say that they couldn't play.
On the other hand the great Peter Green had really skinny 'girly' hands and what that man could do to a guitar in his day was magical.

I like to keep long nails if i can, i drive trucks for a living so i'm always breaking them.

If you're r/h when playing you dont use l/h thumb much, but i also like the l/h thumbnail long to match the r/h thumbnail, call it vanity if you like.

:D Welcome to the club ! ... and it really hurts !

As i am not a real guitarist i don't have much dexterity and velocity but i've noticed when i play with my nails ( not all , i can't manage to do it) the sound is very close to the one of Mike and this rather than when i play with a plectrum .

So long nails are essential !  :)
