The man is (and was) a mystery. Straight out of having made Earth Moving with songs like Nothing But and Holy, he now loathes Stock Aitken & Waterman. His love affair with "real" instruments is on and off all the time. With TSODE he was back to the computers and with Guitars it was all anti-synths again, only to be back in tranceland with Tres Lunas & L&S.
"I love the sound of untrained voices" says the man who would eventually pioneer the usage of virtual vocalists.  :p

Interesting piece anyway, thanks for posting. It's interesting to see in hindsight how hard Mike was working at the time, completing Amarok, Heaven's Open and TBII in a relatively short space of time.

And the TB/Amarok double pack? Did that really happen? I'm not much a record collector so I could very well have missed it.

He reminds me so much of myself - perhaps that's why his music can strike such a chord (pun intended) with me - I'm always changing my mind. But as Churchill said, "A wise man changes his mind many times, a fool, never".

I just noticed the part about the boomerangs. That explains their presence in Tr3s Lunas!

Some people definitely should play more and talk less. No, Bono, I wasn't talking about you this time.

I mean, as for the "lack of musicianship" Mike predicted, when was the last time he was able to do a song as beautiful as Girl/Boy Song by Aphex Twin? Sheesh, think whatever you wish about synthesizers, actual instruments and untrained voices, but give up the apocalypse predictions, people. They never work.

Now, regarding his rant on the "World Music bandwagon", I'd be angry too if that happened to me; but actually for being "thrown" on a bandwagon as dirty and stinky as "World Music". I hate that term so, so, SO very very very much.

Lars my thoughts exactly .
Virtual vocals missed that one well spotted.
Cave the TB/A double disc did come out over here it was part of a line of 2 for 1 or Nice Price or something like that.
The cover had a white background with both album covers on front as I had both I didn't bother getting it .

Its an interesting piece to read, and show's how much Mike changes his ideas and thoughts all the time, and for me that is what makes him such an interesting person, both in mind and music.

Propably! Consistence is overrated - at least in music and art. It takes courage to change ones mind. Too many people live they lives by something they once said.

Exactly, if a magazine/paper writer quoted to Mike something he said years ago, I'm sure Mike would not care, and reason something new to make his current opinion valid. And at the end of the the average person changes there views most of the time throughout there life, the difference is its not it print and held against them!!!
