The Caveman Group: Members Posts: 2178 Joined: Jan. 2008 Posted: Feb. 18 2010, 04:37 Pierre Moerlin every time for me.Super inventive with the deftest of touches almost like a jazz drummer.But then i'm a big Gong fan.I want a clone for my band.  Simon Philips is hugely talented but doesn't seem to have the flair the Moerlin has.Of course this is all subjective.  And who could forget Morris Pert (except Mike on Montreux).Brilliant drummer with the silliest hair cut and best sideburns of all time.Forever 70's.Even recent pics. -------------- THE COMING OF THE GREAT WHITE HANDKERCHEIF IS NIGH. Dirk Star Group: Members Posts: 1331 Joined: Sep. 2007 Posted: Feb. 19 2010, 03:30 Yeah I agree with Ommagest,and I`d pretty much pick those examples I think.There`s a lot of nice drumming on Platinum as well for me,both from Pierre and the session guys.And of course Simon Phillips was always great.Never realised that was Jodi Linscott who played on that tour.As Wiga says she turns up all over the place.Plus I can`t really imagine Phil Collins getting away with that sweater.Even if it was back in his early Genesis days,with Peter Gabriel out front dressed as a hobbit/cauliflower hybrid or something,tongues would still have been set wagging. Milamber Group: Musicians Posts: 2275 Joined: Feb. 2010 Posted: Feb. 19 2010, 07:54 No votes for Mike on Wonderful Land   Its easy to see we have our faves and even though SP & PM play the same instrument IMHO(despite early comment) they are not comparable class is class no matter your preference youve got Crises and The Lake but the solo at Knebworth!    **** me. I myself have been playing 20 yrs can only a passable Taurus III. Back to top

The Caveman Group: Members Posts: 2178 Joined: Jan. 2008 Posted: Feb. 19 2010, 09:24 You're lucky that you can even do that much!Tuarus III is impossible on guitar and god knows i've tried!  While i think Simon Philips is a great drummer you have to hand it to Pierre for being able to play a lot more than drums.The bit in Incantations on the Exposed DVD where he and Benoit are playing vibes.Now that's impressive.Especially since Pierre didn't consider himself a proper vibrophonist (see the interview in the articles section).As a drummer though he was unbelievable.As milamber says the solo at Knebworth is amazing.And he looked so happy while he doing it too.I believe he was quite a troubled soul but on the Knebworth and Exposed DVDs he looked so happy to be playing drums. For further proof of his prowess check out any of the Radio Gnome Invisible trilogy by Gong.Ok i am biased but by god can that man play.Classically trained too. Sadly missed.
