Hello (sorry for my bad english),

Lately I made my mother listen to Mike's great guitar solos (there's a topic about them somewhere on the forum), and she told me : "That's not guitar, that's synthetiser" (is synthetiser well spelled?)

What she means is that he use guitar, but mixed with synthetiser.  (In Amarok, Far Above The Clouds, possibly QE2 in QE2 album).

Is it true?  Because I'm not very good in guessing instruments.  She's better than me, so it could be true.

Is it?

Thank you,

Guimauve2

The answer is a definite no. Mike gets his unique guitar sound through a complicated chain of devices, such as overdrive, EQs and such. There is no synthesizer in it. (Maybe it would be possible to find one or two examples where there is, not sure about that. But generally, not at all.)

Mike has occasionally used a guitar synthesizer, but not often. The only times I can think of are: one solo on Clear Light from Tubular Bells 2, a few solos from Tubular Bells III (especially the Secrets tracks) and the 'guitar saxaphone' from Tres Lunas. There probably are others, but those are the main ones. When I say 'guitar synthesizer, I am talking about a PRS guitar with a Roland MIDI pickup attached, so it is a real guitar. But certainly, there is no synthesizer on the vast majority of Mikes guitar solos, definately not on the ones you mentioned. Others may have more info, but I'm sure about this.

There's loads of MIDI guitar work on Guitars, actually, and there's some guitar synth on Voyager too. That 'clear light' sound crops up in a fair number of other places as well (like Sentinel, there some on TSODE too...he used to play those with the sunburst strat before he got the PRS).
There's the solo on Discovery, of course, which I suspect is a guitar and synth layer (he used one of the Roland synth guitars on that album, I think a G808, for anyone who gives a monkey's ;). He had a Roland bass as well, a G33), and he does a similar thing on No Man's Land (reprise). Those are the only two which come to mind as being guitar mixed with synthesiser.

I think on that extended version of "shadow on the wall" (On "The complete") has a roland Gr300 solo on it. And also "Shine" which used the polyphonic distortion from the Gr300 unit via a modified gibson sg
Mike has probably used just about every guitar synth that roland has ever made!

Yeah.  That is true because I watched the "Shine" video from the Elements DVD before Christmas and when Mike Oldfield performs the guitar solo for "Shine" a small black MIDI Synth Pickup can be seen in between the bridge and the ordinary P-90 pickup on the Gibson SG Junior guitar, which means the guitar solo sound for "Shine" comes from the GR 300 guitar synth.

The added controls for the MIDI Synth Pickup can also be seen towards the lower treble side of the guitar.  :)  :)
