On a serious note, has anybody noticed Mikes does not sound too healthy lately. At first I thought maybe it was just a cold or flue, indeed he said in one interview that this was the case. But I have noticed that in recent interviews he seems to be talking slowly and gasping/running out of breath.
Does Mike still smoke? If so, what does he smoke nowadays and how many?

My darling wife has told me if I were wearing a mic on my shirt, people would hear my smokers breathing, or is that wheezing?? I forgot about a mic clipped onto his shirt.
So maybe I was just concerned about nothing.
Hmmm, apart from my own health.

Smoking produces free radicals which helps on the ageing process + carciogenic substances  :O

Even with those rollups, Mike swims everyday to keep fit and of course it helps ya to breathe better, as well as playing tennis, squash, running and mountain biking.

The problem when you smoke is your lung becomes black and you've got a lot of health problems. Hope that Mike takes care of his situation regarding his rollups...if he quits smoking would be ab fab for him...but it's only his decision.

Free Radicals!

That sounds political. As a non-native, I've never heard that phrase before :)

Ha  - ha - to be free (hums bit from Tres Lunas) and a radical. :)  But....here is a link to the chemical bonding-type health aspects. Am just flying through this morning--can't attest to the bias of the rest of that website, but think that's the free rad variety to which Tati refers. I have an acquaintenance who was just warned at the age of 40 to stop smoking because she was already showing signs of emphysema. At 40.

I've always thought that smoking - whatever substance - was a bad decision, but that is what it is: a personal decision. Nicotine is easily as addictive as heroine and take a real commitment to kick.

Whatever other problems Mike has had, he has always seemed physically healthy, youthful and even robust to the point where he has been able to adopt new fashions and carry them off.

However, I first began to wonder about his health when I watched Through the Keyhole. I may have been seeing things, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear he had suffered a minor stroke; the left hand side of his face didn't seem as animated a his right.

I'd take more comfort from the suggestion about the microphone if we were talking about someone with less experience of recording sound, than  I can of Mike.

Of course, if he is sufffering his first bout of chronic illness that might explain his apparent listlessness - though that too might be a figment of my imagination.

Whatever, I can't think of someone who'd welcome interference less than Mike, so al I will do is wish him good health.

i gave up smoking in may this year, and have not touched one since, im not saying its easy, it has to be the hardest thing i have ever done, im 30 and had been smoking for 15 years, half my life, things like that become intergrated into your routine and to stop something means changing everything that fits with your day, i was lucky in some respects, i just bought a new computer  so to fund it i decided to try and stop smoking, i also got a cold in the same week so i didnt feel like it either, so that helped me i nthe first few days, it is a very very difficult thing to stop, im glad i did, but at the end of the day it is up to the individual, mike knows what hes doing, lets just hope that he decides that he would be better off without them, i know i am

I worked on a free radical lab at my university in 2003,that's why I know a bit about the subject, and did some studies on the relationship between them and ageing.

Yes I also noticed in the raft interview that Mike was not using the left side of his mouth when he was speaking, possibly an indication of a mild stroke, and possibly a reason why he plays traditional instruments less often than he use to.

I'm sure we'd have heard about it if something as serious as that had happened.

I noticed that Mike talked from the side of his mouth in the interview from the Knebworth video, and that was in 1980! So I don't think there's a stroke there. Maby it's down to sheer laziness :-)
Also, if half his face was affected by the stroke, then so would one of his arms. And listening to the new album I would say his guitar playing is well intact.

But the of course a man in his 50s who's smoked since his teens - he's most likely to be affected in some way.

Hello Lars,

Thanks for your response to Tubular Belle's and my post. I hope you're right.

Of course strokes vary enormously in severity and don't necessarily mean permanent loss of use of a limb or whatever. I don't think the possibility of a minor stroke can be entirely ruled out and don't think Mike would make it public if he'd suffered one.

Certainly you're right about his guitar playing, which alone proves no serious effects.

Wow you guys scrutinise everything!  :O

But his health? C'mon!

He smokes, I know several people who speak with one side of their mouth, and they're fine.

The music matters
