I'm not sure about this, but I think I remember Mike saying in one of his interviews in 2006 that he would spend some 3 years to finish his current project. Then, the next album was likely to be planned for 2009.

In Resolution Magazine, Mike told that the album was already at a demo stage and would be based on the theme of Halloween/Samhain. So I thought that this album could possibily be released in the fall of 2008, in a period matching with the theme of the music.

But, more recently, in the interview published in the spanish (newspaper ?) Informacion (Informacion.es), Mike said -while speaking about his album : "Estamos estudiando la posibilidad de tocar en las capitales de Europa, incluso en EspaƱa a finales de 2007."

Correct me if my translation is wrong, but it seems that he said : "We are studying the possibility of a tour in the capital cities of Europe, including Spain, at the end of 2007"...

Does that mean that the next album should be released around the fall of 2007, previously to an european tour ?

In Resolution Magazine, Mike spoke about a possible association with Karl Jenkins and his wish to record parts of this album at Abbey road studios : I wonder if the project being only at this stage of the recording (only wishes, not anything really started) can lead to an album being released this year.

It is very likely that the record will be finished and released respectively this year. Mike is working on the project for a couple of months now.

The record company, now Universal Classic, has given him three years to finish the project. But once Mikes idea has evolved he is very anxious to come to terms with it.

He has been in contact with Karl Jenkins since last year and it looks as he is going to do the orchestrations for the album.

Now that he has fulfilled his contract with PSE Germany to do the Nokia Night of the Proms tour, he can let his mind wander.

Its great there is a new album so soon against expectations but on the other hand should we be worried about the speed of its composition? Yikes.... Mozart was highly prolific so the pace at which people work is individual and Mike is not consistent, Amarok was produced quickly for example, while his earlier works seemed to take ages.

Mozart was so prolific 'cause he got paid for every single thing he did (basically). This was not the case with later classical composers, and it's obviously not the case with modern musicians - they get paid in advance by the record companies, who don't care a flying f*ck whether the musician does or doesn't get money from his musical creations. It's quite sad, really, but I think it's like that.

However, I think Mike's going to release something new in 2008. 2007 is a bit too early for him - his output for this year is is "Changeling" autobiographic book. ;)

I don't know for sure but I suspect that Mike worked on Amarok and Earth Moving in parallel, putting less effort into EM and more into Amarok. And besides, many ideas behind Amarok were in his head for a long time then. But of course that doesn't mean Mike's productivity doesn't fluctuate, for example he made The Killing Fields and Discovery at once in one year, between two tours.

Ugo, you appear not to have seen the news that Mike's new album is due October. And the point about productivity is that people work at different paces so what can seem like a rush can be natural talent or inspiration...or it can be a rush! The point Eeton makes about TKF/Discovery is helpful.

Eeton I doubt your point about EM and Amarok. Amarok was made by Mike recording a minute or so a day every day spontaneously in the studio until it was finished. I have never heard anything to suggest he did it while he was recording EM but I'd be interested if you can source something on that, they do sound very different in every aspect.

I suppose what one can say is that Mike won't be playing or recording the album in the same way as usual with this...he'll be writing it and perhaps scoring it. So what I'm musing is, if this is a continuous player, rather than shorter pieces (and I really hope its a longer piece) then has he given it an appropriate gestation period? I am just a touch troubled by the speed he seems to work now compared to the pace he worked at in the 70s. Amarok reassures me, because it was fast and fantastic. But this nagging doubt remains. I put it down to natural rhythms of working being inconsistent (as you say Eeton, fluctuations) and perhaps technology being so much easier for Mike to compose things on the hop.

Anyway, I've chewed this bone to pieces now.

Is Mike signed to Universal Classic or is it just for this album?
