Just wondered if anyone can clear up a question about Mike's Precision Basses. There are several photos on the net of Mike playing a 'blonde' precision with a black pick-guard with Kevin Ayres and the Whole World. The bass appears again towards the end of the World Tour Guide '82/83 alongside a couple of acoustics and the Telecaster (oh and Mike! ).

Meanwhile in the Boxed pamphlet there are a couple of pictures that include a Blonde Precision with a white pick-guard. Just wondered if this was the same guitar or a different one, as the instrument list suggests just one Blonde and a 'Red'.

Incidentally, does anyone know where I might find some scanned pictures from the '82/83 Tour Guide?

Thanks

Looks like nobody knows the answer to this one. If anybody has any good ideas about where I might try next, please let me know, as I'd like to know a little more about this guitar.

Meanwhile, thanks to manintherain for the scan of the '82/83 Tour Guide photo.

I wonder why he played them in the Ayers days and then waited 10 years before he used it again...
But if it's in the Boxed pictures, I assume it's the same one that he kept and suddenly felt like playing again...

Not sure if he kept it after the early 80's... It wasn't sold with the bunch of others recently???

Sorry, I don't have any answers, but I thought it was a pity no-one responded to your thread  :)  ;)

Mike did sell it - I was lucky to be in a postion to be able to buy it. I've sent a picture in and it is now shown on the Instrument page of this site. I'll try to get some more done and uploaded soon.

I've only ever seen reference to two Precisions, the blonde and the red, but I've not seen any pictures of the red one. So I figured that the guitar in the Kevin Ayres photos and the boxed set were the same, but the pick guard had been changed at some point??

I was told that this Precision was used on Ommadawn, which if true, I'm really pleased about. Similarly, if he had it pre-TB and post-TB, then why use a different one on TB? (I think I read somewhere that he borrowed one for TB). I guess there is a good explanation or more likely I've got my facts wrong. :)

I also noticed a photo on this site, that might be the precision. It is here, posted by Oblique:

It is side on so difficult to tell for sure. If it is, then as you say he still seems to be using the guitar in the 80's and I understood from Chander's that he was planning to use it for another project that didn't materialise and that's why the frets were removed.

Anyway thanks for your response.

Hi Chris,

hereĀ“s what Guitar Magazine recently wrote about your tool:

FENDER PRECISION 1960
Oldfield only had one bass at the time of recording Tubular Bells, a red Precision used during his tenure with Kevin Ayers and The Whole World. At some point it has been de-fretted. He replaced it with a Wal, also on sale, for later recordings.

Do you have a copy of the article?

Cheers

Yes thank you, I got a copy of the magazine.

This text just adds to the confusion for me. This and other articles suggest that it was a red precision, which was also used with Kevin Ayres and the Whole World. It also says that it was defretted at some point. But none of the pictures I've seen look like a red precision to me. See www.milesapart.co.uk/precision.html

What do you think?
