Don't know if this has been noticed before, but if you listen to Mike's Reel, you'll hear (David Bedford's?) voice saying "hit it then!" and then the accordion player starts (probably Mike). :) :)

Also, when was this song made/released? It was on a Women of Ireland single at the time, wasn't it? Because I have the feeling this song was made way before that, I guess around 1975/76. Because the guitar sounds like his SG and I also hear his Solina. And also because I hear David's voice.

Yep, Mike´s Reel was released on the Women of Ireland-single. At the time, Mike was planning on putting this track on the Voyager-album, but he or the record company finally decided against it.
In the production/copyright-section, this song is dated 1996, so I guess it was recorded during the Voyager-sessions.

Dunno... guess I'll have to listen to it again (it's been some time).

Yeah, it's been a long time for me too. Just listened to it last week for the first time in about a year and a half or something like that.

Say, did you find your carpet by the way, your Dudeness? :)

I think it would have been a good 'Sailor's Hornpipe' track for TB3. :) I love this song. It's just so fun.

That's a very good idea, MusicallyInspired. It might have justified the title of that album a little more.

@Blue Dolphin: I never lost my rug, it just got peed on. But Maud took hers back, so yes, I'm still looking for a new one. :D

It's a great film, a real classic. I think the Coen-brothers also did a great job on The Hudsucker Proxy and Fargo.

But we're getting a little off-topic here I think...

Mike´s Reel was dug out of the Virgin or better Abbey Road vaults prior to compiling the Elements box. It was the only unreleased track they were willing to include on that compilation.

Hang on though, Mike's Reel isn't in the Elements Box set (at least not on my copy). Where did you get that info from? I'd be very interested to know because I'd like to take issue with those who put the Elements collection together and how they managed to make such a cock up of it.

Hi TOBY, it´s sad too see that my memory isn´t that good anymore. I have taken Mike´s Reelf vor Vivaldi. Sorry!

Mike´s Reel was originally intended to finish the Voyager album, but has not been included. An excerpt was put on the Dark Star website for download shortly after.

The musicians used for sessions on the album included Matt Molloy (flute an tin whistle) and Sean Kane (tin whistle and fiddle) from the Chieftains, Davy Spillane and Noel Eccles from the Riverdance Ochestra, Maire Breatnach, London Voices (Choir), Liam O´Flynn, Highland Pipers, Londons Symphony Orchestra, John Myers and Pat Walsh. Les Penning (the recorder player who featured on Cuckoo Song, amongs others) also did quite a lot of session work with Mike, although his input did not quite match the style of the final album, so was not included.

Chanced upon this post as I was trying to see if the original version of Mike's Reel was anywhere on the net! I played whistle on this track - basically I was asked to play whistle/fiddle on "Mont St. Michel" on the "Voyager" album and this was the second track presented to me on the day. The version I played on originally had a hip-hop beat and sounded really good - the released version basically lost the beat (and my whistle part) and was more stripped down, still retaining most of the other instrumental parts that were present in the recording I played on. I don't suppose anyone has this original version?

Our pleasure to make your acquaintance, JJAM.  I can think of one or two members who are likely racking their brains as I type if they caught your post yesterday.  For the moment, I regret you've got me - with the vaguest of expertise about searching for unreleased whatnots.  The bits of Tubular Bells II that are free of the influence of Trevor Horn's producing, for example, are apparently well-known, and a complete mystery to me given I've never really tried to find them.

You may be the first to ever reveal the circumstances behind the recording of this track, but I hope I'm proved wrong and answers are out there.  All I've found is this reference to a bootleg album, which probably is just including it in its rare but released form.

And again, welcome!
