Does anybody knows what's Mike's religion?? Is he a Christian, Buddist or Muslim? I tried to find it but I couldn't.

HI.. i noticed no reply yet... intriguing question and quite surprising nobody seems to know the answer...my guess he his a non practicing catholic.
Some of his releases refer to God ..especially the bible quotes in TSODE.
He also has Irish connections (a good percentage of catholics)
Mike is quite unique in his thoughts and probably like me is unsure on what this living world is all about.... religion in my view is a very difficult area, do we believe in God ? How was earth formed? Charles Darwin theory ..good question!!

also the album title Heavens Open, and Holy on Earth Moving i find that heavens open is a very religious album, so maybe a few listens to that may help you in your quest, although by the title, catholic is a good bet, im not to good on all that stuff!

i myself try to be open minded, after death is..............whatever there is, i'll find out one day!  :D

P.S the quotes from TSODE are from the apollo moon landing, they may have something to do with religion, or maybe they just fit the stile of the album.............space and all that? just a thought.  ;)

Hi there everybody! :-)
I got the answer when listening to The Millennium Bell. I definitely think that he's a Christian, because track 1 (Peace On Earth) is about the birth of Christ and track 4 (Sunlight Shining Through Cloud) features a female voice speaking the lyrics of Amazing Grace.

God bless Mike Oldfield! ;-)

Mike doesn't seem to think that he's so definitely a Christian, though!

There are indeed a number of references to Christianity in his work, thanks to his Catholic upbringing, but there have also been references to Wicca (like in Incantations) and Balinese Hinduism (The Wind Chimes), to name two. This mixture is very much in line with what Mike himself says about his not following a particular organised religion, but rather, combining elements of many.

Is the "Diana, Luna, Lucina" section actually drawn from Wicca? I thought it was inspired from more authentic ancient sources, such as Roman mythology (Wicca being a rather modern creation). Or are you referring to something different?

It obviously troubles you about the path that our world seems to be taking, in the past the solution to that was firm religious, beliefs that would guide you in the right way to do things. Does your spiritual world have any religious basis or origin?

Well my mother being Irish, she was a Roman Catholic. They put me on the first stages of educating me to be a Catholic. I remembered just after my first confession, I just couldn't make any sense of it and I just starting evolving on my own. I am very spiritually aware and I love churches, it doesn't matter what religion. I just love any place where people focus on spiritual energy. It just gives me peace and it gives me happiness.

I believe it (the incantation) is a modern synthesis of ancient ideas...which I believe applies to Wicca as well. You'd do best to invoke Inkanta if you want to know any more than that, though.

Mike apparently got the incantation from a group of 'strange druids'. There's a topic about it in the lyrics and language section somewhere.
