Five Miles Out ("Just hold your heading through..."). It's so dramatic and intense.
Holy wasn't Mike as far as I know. It's Adrian Belew.

Really? :) I can picture you in a welder's mask & equipment. :)

As I said elsewhere, Amarok (all of it) brings me extreme emotional highs and extreme emotional lows, and I'm glad about it. I think it's the most wildly emotional piece in the whole Oldfieldian catalog. That said, I admit that some parts of MotS are capable of giving me the shivers every time I hear them.

I don't think any vocal tracks of Mike's get anywhere near that. I love the way Bonnie Tyler belts it out on "Islands", and I'm fond of the vocal performances on that album in general. But his instrumental work is IMHO much more powerful.

I did not know holy was sung by andrew, mike did not always do vocals did he? his guitar was his voice pretty much and very impressive, he probably plays the frets in his sleep! deb

That would be my choice also,as he just kind of belts it out  without any pretension or affectation if you like..Great stuff.

And Adrian Belew yeah,he`s a bit of a strange one I think vocaly.I do like him though, but he seems to change his whole vocal style completely depending on whatever type of music it is.If you listen to him on City Of Tiny Lights by Frank Zappa for instance,he kind of comes over as this "white soul boy" type almost.Where as on Holy you know he sounds like he`s trying to give it the full Ian Gillan to me,with knobs on.Just not my kind of thing I`m afraid.Whilst on a lot of his own solo material and stuff with King Crimson etc. There are a number of tracks I`ve heard by him where he`s certainly channeling John Lennon no doubt it.He could even give old Julian a run for his money in fact,it`s likeness is that uncanny.

Yeah if somebody were ever to appear on Stars In Their Eyes and say.."tonight Matthew I`m going to be Adrian Belew"...You would have absolutely no bloomin` idea what the Dickens they were going to sound like.Even if you owned every single album he`d ever sung on...Would be even better though if somebody were to appear on it and say "tonight Matthew I`m going to be Mike Oldfield"...Only to then start belting out Moonlight Shadow whilst sporting a ginger wig and a baby blue jump suit. They don`t call him The Changeling for nothing you know.

Well if he did, "Moonlight Shadow" raises some questions!

(Airborne has just been facetious on this thread so I thought I would be as well!;)

His vocal tracks don't quite do it for me, though Horseback comes close.

It's his music with no lyrics that affect me in a powerful way - like wordless poetry.

I have to agree,

I would have to say that The Ommadawn Chant, leading up to the screaming guitar solo does it every time    :)  :D .
On Horseback as it has a childlike innocence about it.

Yes - I was forgetting about the Ommadawn chant - leading up to the BIG O.  :O

Also: - Amarok's "Sondela" chant - leading up to Maggie.

I see that "Heaven's Open" has been mentioned, and that's probably the song that most equates an 'emotional high' for me. It's practically euphoric, isn't it?
