misquoting Reg:

Over the past few weeks I’ve been thinking about what Reg (John Cleese) said in that funny movie, “WHAT HAVE MUSICIANS EVER DONE FOR US?” – cos I really want to know! But first off the bat, I have to exclude Mike Oldfield from this article because let’s face it this is a brilliant website.

So let me ask you again, “WHAT HAVE MUSICIANS EVER DONE FOR US?” – ok you might say,  there’s Bono and his mates down in Africa fighting for the Rights of the poor. And ok, I suppose there’s Sting doing his best to save the rain forests, and, back in the 80’s Bob Geldoff put on a marverlous show and raised lots of money for famine relief, and also Paul McCartney has built a fame academy for Liverpool talent, and of course didn’t Yes once save a whale – but apart from all that, “WHAT HAVE MUSICIANS EVER DONE FOR US?”

What I’m getting at is what do they contribute to our world. I know Kevin Ayers invented the Bananascope, and Lol Crème came up with the Gizmo, and Dave Stewart made a big helmet,(I guess we all have to make a living somehow!) – but putting these things aside for the moment, “WHAT HAVE MUSICIANS EVER DONE FOR US?”

Now I know that when you read this you’ll have immediately come up with the obvious, that they are really good entertainers. They thrill, amaze, and very often confound us, and in doing so they can create in us deep impressions that eventually become vivid memories. They can also bring us together wether it be in the sharing of common taste albeit  in a concert hall, an outdoor festival, or even in a grand stadium. Their song’s can even enlighten us by revealing those little gems of wisdom, cool philosophy, heart warming sentiment. You may even add that their music can sometimes bring couples together resulting in a marriage.  I wont dispute that!

All I want to know is – apart from the humanitarianism, the amazing inventions, the great shows, the mystisism, the wisdom, the philosophy, and the soul – “WHAT HAVE MUSICIANS EVER DONE FOR US?”

So please please help me, is there anybody out there that can shine some light on the heart of the matter, I would really like to know, because recently I’ve been seriously thinking about changing my  religion.

Seems to me I saw Ian Anderson really trying hard to cut carbon emisions. Very environment oriented. How about all the thousands of benefit concerts? Some of them really do worthy things......

Several of them have learned us to use excessive amounts of alcohol, drugs, violence and just a very depraved lifestyle.

I can´t thank them enough really

Thanks guys! I heard on the radio yesterday that sting has donated a painting to the city of newcastle that highlights it's industry down the years.

I thought that maybe I'd injected too much cynicism into the article and had clouded the point I was trying to make. But you seem to have gotten the gist of it ... cheers!

"what have Musicians Ever done for Us?" - apart from the looooong drum solo's, air guitar to keep us fit, encouraging bald blokes over 50 to have pony-tail hair, created Live Aid and made politicians aware of the "charadee" vote, but mostly musicians have been the background to all the best and all the worst moments of my life - the backing tracks to my memories

The answer is 42 - but what is the question?

What exactly is it that you want musicians to do for us?

Here's Oscar Wilde, in the preface to "The Picture Of Dorian Gray":

'The artist is the creator of beautiful things. To reveal art and conceal the artist is art's aim...........
All art is quite useless'

Who honestly cares how upset the likes of Sting and Bono get about this or that global crisis? I'm sure we all worry about these things. Most of us are on much tighter budgets than these bloated twats.

This quote I can also use for DJs...to tell ya the truth, the only thing they do is to keep people partying madly, just that.

At least musicians are more than that.
