I was going to start a Poll but on reflection there were to many Candidates to Choose From...So It might be better to make a straw poll of peoples Favs then poll the top 10 Choices after a while...   Ok assume u had to win over someone to MO  armed with 5 Tks  ie could be a Long Tk even HR side 2 for instance and you only had the 1st 40 seconds of the Tk to convince them what would you choose.
?        OK my 5  that I think get the Attention quickly are
               1  LET there be LIGHT
               2  TO FRANCE
               3  SHADOW ON THE WALL  not my fav song but great opener
               4 HEAVENS OPEN
               5 MASTERMIND

1. HR part II. The chord sequence is so instantly memorable.

2. Taurus I. Only because there's a weird but attractive feeling to it. There's so much air between the bass guitar and the mandolin. A feeling of hugeness and possibly vertigo.

3. Platinum. Whatever instrument it is (clavinet?), it grabs your attention. A very simple two-chord figure that makes you wonder what comes next.

4. Tubular Bells part I. The piano figure would be good on its own even if it went on like that for 25 minutes!

5. Amarok. Absolutely confusing, but very addictive. I think it's a shame that this album doesn't hold my attention all the way through, but it does open with a bang!

Worst Mike Oldfield intro ever:

The Wind Chimes (part 1). It's the intro of intros. It's pompous and it makes me wonder when the proper music begisn.

40 seconds? That is a bit of a challenge. Anyway, I agree with a couple of Lars's choices (especially for the Worst Intro - ugh!!;).

1- Tubular Bells, part 1 (if THAT doesn't grab someone, hardly anything will);
2- Hergest Ridge, part 2 (great texture);
3- Incantations, part 2 (very unsettling and intriguing);
4- Sheba (the melody kicking in at once is like a headbutt to the chest);
5- Moonlight Shadow (almost the epitome of Oldfield's sense of catchiness).

For hooking intros, I like the choices of "Taurus I", "Moonlight Shadow", and "To France". In the case of Incantations, though, I'd go with "Part 3".

1) Conflict
2) Serpent Dream
3) Tubular World
4) Out of Mind
5) Tears of An Angel

Mine would probably be

1. Tubular Bells Pt 1
2. Tubualr Bells Pt 2
3. Amarok
4. Let There Be Light
5. Incantations Pt 4 - I don't know what it is about those vibraphones, or whatever they are, but they intrigue me so much.

My 5 favourites intro (both instr and short tracks) :

1-Ommadawn pt 1 - simply magic !
2-Portsmouth - you're so directly in the song - so not really an "intro"
3-To France -for the quite same reason
4-Pacha Mama - I find this fragile piano tune so moving
5-Blue Night
