Hi. I have been a fan of MO for about two or three years now.

About a year ago, my uncle passed away and I was really saddened by this. I usually tried to share my musical finds with him, but this was one I would not get the chance to do.

As I was driving to his funeral, I was listening to Tubular Bells. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, I got a fragmented idea for a story for the first half of Tubular Bells. I wrote this idea down as soon as I could. When I listened to Part Two, a story didn't come up, but now I actually have one.

In short, my point is I am trying to think of stories for MO's side long pieces. What I do is get ideas in my head, write out specific points in the music (i.e. I make a chart with a time in the track and then write what that point means to the story), and then write out a full story on it. Here's how I'm doing so far:
Tubular Bells Part One (in process of writing story)
Tubular Bells Part Two (in process of writing story)
Hergest Ridge Part One (fragmented ideas)
Hergest Ridge Part Two (only a theme)
Ommadawn Part One (nothing yet)
Ommadawn Part Two (nothing yet)
Incantations Part One (fragmented ideas)
Incantations Part Two (fragmented ideas)
Incantations Part Three (fragmented ideas)
Incantations Part Four (fragmented ideas)
Platinum (have not heard entire track)
Taurus II (in process of writing story)
Crises (story is finished)
The Lake (have to write story)
The Wind Chimes (may not do-Mike already has a video for it! :))
Amarok (fragmented ideas)
Music From The Balcony (nothing yet)
Tubular Bells II Part One (in process of writing story)
Tubular Bells II Part Two (have to write story)
Mont St. Michael (have not heard)

Has anyone else ever had this kind of experience?

A while ago had an idea for a sort of "musical" that connected many of the songs of "Earth Moving" and "Heaven's Open". I never really did anything with it. Years later, Broadway and others have started to do the same sort of thing (such as the Abba musical).

I've often dreamed 'film' sequences to Mike's music, usually connected with other preoccupations at the time.

When I was writing a novel, Pacha Mama featured a bunch of soldiers jumping out of the back of a Hercules aircraft. I had worked out the camera angles and which sequences worked with which pieces; for instance: the men would jump as the first 'Huaca Pacha...' came in, pull their rip cords on the second and spring an ambush on the third.

All that stopped when I realised that I couldn't reconcile the ending of the story with its moral.

I also dreamed of a sort of natural history film for The Lake: sometimes focusing above the surface, sometimes below and sometimes on reflections, ripples etc.

Oh! and btw, did you know that the songs on Discovery were originally meant for a musical based on the life of Mary, Queen of Scots?

Fascinating. From early on listening to Amarok a story started to form for me. Now I love listening to the whole thing with my eyes closed, imagining the "film" in my head. For me, the story/visuals heighten some sections of the music enormously.

Doesn't happen (with me) for any of MO's other music however.

Cheers

Matt
