For those who fancy a bit of musical silliness, I present...Moonlight Mando!

This is Moonlight Shadow played on an Octave Mandola (an oversized mandolin - people in the US might know it as an Octave Mandolin...either way, it's pretty much the same thing, just a lot bigger than the mandolin and tuned an octave lower) - it's a kind of 'Guitars' type idea of playing everything with the one instrument (and so even the bass parts were played on it, via the little cheat of pitching the part down an octave after recording it). It's not meant to be taken too seriously...have fun

Very well done. Good fun indeed.

Well, you never know...

I don't often feel like recording cover tracks though - I tend to spend enough time recording other things...slavishly recreating something that's been done already doesn't tend to interest me either, though it's usually quite impressive to hear, when somebody does it.

I don't see it like that. I don't try to make exact copies of tracks but my own versions of pieces of music that I like. Ok, so I haven't recorded many covers either, but it's very good training. I don't want to waste my own musical ideas if I can't get the right sound. I'm glad I didn't record many original tracks when I was a beginner 15-year-old MIDI geek, that would've been quite embarrassing. ;-)  Now I feel that my production skills and gear are good enough for recording an album of my own, so I'll just concentrate on my own music from now on.

Exactly, Allan - in the case of this track, Moonlight Shadow just happened to be the unwitting victim of my experiment. It was a good base to try out the idea with. Sometimes it'll be something of my own, I guess it really depends on what's going through my mind at the time.

I only just dl'ed it and enjoyed it thoroughly. It's always nice to hear an instrument with a lot of expression like a guitar or, in this case, a mandolin and I very much like this version, especially the solo which is my all time favourite solo anyway.

I know I'm an outsider since I hardly ever post on these forums but from what I see there's a lot of musical talent here. Have you ever thought of collaborating on songs (not resticted to MO covers)?

Very inspiring to hear this stuff...

Yeah, a tubular.net band! They could play live concerts etc. I would love to see that!

Some members of the fan community have collaborated in the past. It's generally something that's talked about but doesn't really get anywhere, but there are a few times that things have come together.

There's no particular reason why it can't be done, though there are a lot of reasons why people don't get round to doing it...

Nice to hear you enjoyed it, Mark 1 - the solo proved to be a fun part to do...

If there's going to be a band, count me in as keyboard and bodhran player! ;)
