Last year I bought Tubular Bells III and after listening to the
first track, I was a little bit chocked. Techno is not my music style. :(
I returned to the recordstore and changed the cd to the 'Crises' cd. Is there some of Mikes latest records, from Tubular Bells II to Tres Lunas that sounds like TB III, electronic techno style? (I have heard Songs of an distant
earth, which I like.)

But... :/ I've only heard the
first track on TB III, which I don't like. Are some of the other
tracks the same style like the first one? Maybe I did a stupid
choice when I changed this cd...

(excuse me for my bad english...I'm swedish)

WHY did you go and change the cd after listening only to the first track!!!? WHY?! How stupid. Why couldn't you go through the other tracks as well before rushing to the record store?! So weird...

And why didn't you like the first track? You think "techno" music's perhaps too "easy" or doesn't require any musical skills to make? Just listen, really listen to the first track again. It's really not that "easy" and in Oldfield's case it really defies the common "techno cliches" well. Don't think of it as just plain techno music that you don't like, but as a piece composed by Mike Oldfield, the musician who did TB1, Crises, Amarok etc and who's now experimenting with a new style (and most successfully in my opinion). And even if you think it's "techno" (i hate these categories anyway) it's still VERY powerful, emotional music.

Well I could certainly understand somebody not liking the first track but much as I'm not a huge fan of TB3 it does have FATC which makes it worth having alone, and if you like the style of TSODE you will pretty much like the general feel of the rest of TB3.

The Source of the Secrets certainly isn't techno (not by a long way) but it is a dull half arsed stab in the ambient/trance area of dance music. Personaly I thought Mike fell for every dance music cliche' going. Good dance music is just as difficult/easy to make as any other form of music it just depends on where your talents lie. Sadly for TB3 Mike's talents do not lie in dance music.

Well, if you're looking for solid melodies and inventive music making, you did a good choice in exchanging TBIII for Crises, because this one is FAR more original and solid. Plus, Moonlight Shadow is THE song. :)

Yeah, maybe TBIII isn't "techno", and the other tracks don't follow the same style, but it's a lame album, anyway. There aren't many other Mike albums that go on the same direction, actually. But if you REALLY don't like techno, I'd recommend you to keep a very safe distance from the title track of The Millennium Bell.

i can understand too that someone don't like some track, but to listen only one and make judgement by that..pretty tough

i have a friend who is like that, i always tell him to be a bit more patient

You missed out on Serpent Dream, Outcast, The Top Of The Morning and FATC tsk tsk tsk. That's what you get for judging an MO album by it's first track ;).

For me The Source Of Secrets ends a bit abruptly, it could have went on half as long again as far as i am concerned. Really its only Mike playing along to a bit more heftier a beat than normal, its nothing like the rest of the album and shouldn't put anyone off buying it. Rileman you should really get yourself a copy. I am the opposite way on i find myself buying albums on the strength of one song, finding the rest of the tracks dissapointing (i.e. Sacred spirits first album, after hearing Yeha-noha, it turned out to be the only stand out track, on a fairly miserable native american tribal compilation).

Hello bror! Hilsen fra naboen Norge! he he
Den første cden jeg kjøpte var faktisk Tubular bells III. Det var den jeg falt for. De andre sangene på cden er jo annerledes på en måte. Source of secrets er kanskje litt techno prega. Selv om jeg liker den også veldig godt så er jo f.eks Man in the rain en av de beste etter min smak. Det kan du jo bare se på nick navnet mitt. Crises og Tub III er mine favoritter!!  :p
Ellers er Jewel in the crown veldig bra.
Hilsen Man in crises  :)

Good to hear how much you like Tubular Bells III, Man In Crises, but it would be nice if you'd care to share your thoughts with everyone in English, otherwise people might start feeling left out of the discussion.
I know it's not always easy to express thoughts and feelings in a foreign language, and we've always said here that if it helps people to write in their own language and provide an english translation alongside, then that's fine, but if there isn't one common language here then people may have problems understanding each other!

Thanks for your understanding :)

That I was telling rileman:
Hello its your neigbour country feloow Man in Crises!
My way to get known of Mike was my first cd Tubular Bells III
I remeber that soo good! It happen for three years ago! It was aunthum. Not so long from november.
And I heard in the shop; and I think to my self! WOW! What a album, and I buy it at the moment and played it all time at home. In that moment for my life I had some crises. And man in the rain fitted into my life, as the lyricks tells about a man that have the same feeling that I haved. I loved it!
"How's it feel when there's time to remember
Branches bare, like the trees in November.
Had it all, threw it all away.
Now's a time to walk away"[I]
The words in man in rain was me simply!

From one way to another
Source Of secrets i think it have a little techno style. But I like it! And TB III have so much more to give your ear!
Jewel in the crown : Its very good, beautiful piece of gitars and sound.
Outcast is very heavy! A little Dark star style but its more modern style sound over it. And the gitars! Ha ha. Perfect!
Serpent dream have that spanish feeling! The atmosphere is very dark and moody. It have an mysticflow!
Inner child: In one word! Lovely vocal!
The top of the morning have that easy trip trap feeling. Its a like Landfall, the same style!
And of course!!!!!!!!!!!
Far above the clouds. One of the Mikes best endtitle song ever!!!! You cant miss it!!! no no!!!  ;)
This album have everything I think!
For me one of the favorite! Ever!!!!

And for you other not scandic people! Dont be afraid! I will keep writing english he he!!!

But lately, I've been listening to it in it's total lenght, and it's one of the best!

I think TBIII is one of the worst albums of MO.
Most of the songs are "simple" covers of other MO-songs.
On TBIII, I hear pieces of Amarok, Moonlight Shadow, Crystal Clear.
That's why I think TBIII is less original than all the other albums of MO which are great.

why don't you all just take it that TB3 is just a kind of "tribute to life on Ibiza" it represents all parts of life there...

and hey if you would spend some time there :P you would be influenced too ;)

Okay, maybe I can. But that doesn't make the album any better to my mind. I still think it is horrible.

Oh dear! poor TBiii. And i prefer it to TBii and Amarok. But then, that's not a bad thing. We are all going to have our own and differing opinions on MOs music. Hell, if everyone followed music like sheep we'd all be listening to BLUE, Westlife Mariah 'can i scream any louder?' Carey etc
I adore The Top of the Morning & Man In the Rain... Heather Burnett has Maggie Reilly qualities. Can't knock that. Well, i cant! :)
I also feel that Moonlight Shadow is overrated BUT it's my opinion. Thank goodness we dont all feel the same.
Rileman... you may have swapped TBiii for CRISES ( good choice) but what's to stop you from going back to TBiii another time? and definitely take time to listen to more than one track next time, eh?   :D  Please tell me you've got as far as Shadow on the Wall?? ;)
