This one I made 2 years ago. The accompaniment (piano) is very basic and the guitar is not very good (I will rerecord the guitartrack once), but the most interesting about this cover is IMO the addition of strings and choir.

Here it is: http://users.pandora.be/masmusic/Muse.mp3

Nice touch using a piano. Sounds different when on piano. And the strings and choir are very nice. Perfects song to build up with strings and choir that way. I wish I had better choir sounds or I'd use them myself. Great job!

"Muse" itself is a very basic piece, so almost any cover version of it may reflect that. I really like the idea of using different instruments (in this case, piano) to play the guitar arppeggios. The inversions you use sound different, and I'm not altogether sure I like how they sound, but I do like the tone and feel, and the strings and choir are a very nice addition.

As a guitar player, I'm enamoured with the sounds that only a guitar can produce, but I can definitely appreciate what you've done! (You've made my portable mp3 player list, for all that's worth).

Thanks Brandon & ktran for your comments.

@Brandon: if you can play soundfonts, thesoundsite.net has some good choirsamples.

@ktran: I also prefer the sound of a real guitar. I used to be a guitarplayer (ages ago). But I compose music at night and my wife and children would not appreciate making (guitar)noise in the middle of the night. And I don't have the possibility to record acoustic instruments.

No, I can't use soundfonts :). But I may have to in the future to get certain sounds like a choir etc. Are there any programs that use them? Or is that a sound card specific thing?

With the right soundcard you can load the soundfonts in such a card. I have a Yamaha SW1000XG-card inwhich you can't load soundfonts. I convert the soundfonts into Halionprograms (= program + wav-files). But I think with the right program, you can convert soundfonts into other formats.

Can you do it without a sound card that supports them, though? I only have a SB16.

An unamplified electric guitar makes very little noise... and if you wanted an acoustic sound, you could always go for this:

A lot of my music gets recorded at night as well (day jobs do that to you), and when I don't have the luxury of using an amplifier, I plug a set of headphones into my effects pedal. It's a very quiet setup if you have your door closed, and everyone else has his or her door closed. Best of luck.

The piano accompaniment is very basic indeed, but seems to work for most of the piece. E.g. at 1:04 I could imagine the accompagniment doing some building up.

The strings seem to give it a bit a film music feel. So does the choir. Those sounds aren't bad, but I think they don't fit entirely in the piece. Honestly, I think it's put together a bit to easy.

Thanks ancient (may I call you ancient?) for your comment. You're the first who doesn't like the addition of choir and strings (or the way I did it) and I respect your opinion, but...
First of all, I don't have this "film music feel".
Second: "it's put together too easy", indeed, no big deal. ;)
What I mean is: Muse is written for (1) guitar. If you cover this song you can play it on guitar (or with a guitarsound), or you can do something (preferable) original with it. Well I've chosen the 2nd choise and played it with piano (never heard a Musecover with piano before).
When the piano- and guitarparts were done, I had the feeling I had to put something more, lets say, 'emotional' in the song. So I added the strings- and choirparts, very basic, to avoid making the song too heavy (maybe that's why you say it's put together too easy).

regards

I take it you're not aware of Ancient's common behaviour, MaS. He is the negative critique on these boards for fan tracks or covers. He says more of what's wrong with the track than what's right with it. It's nothing personal or insulting. It's just that's how he criticizes. I wouldn't be too offended, if you are. It doesn't mean he hates it. He just points out the bad points that many others may or may not point out.

Just a note just in case.

Well, it's all just a matter of being fair. If you like it or not, just tell what you think. Negative criticism can be constructive. I didn't post these songs to fondle my ego (is this English?:/). I can stand negative comments, as long as they're are well-founded.

I'm just pointing out that the negative comments he uses are in his own personal opinion.

Anyway, I like the tune very much. I think it could have been done differently in a more build up way (personal taste), but this is nice too. The quality isn't too bad at all.
