Does anyone here play the Myst games at all? I'm not fond of solving puzzles myself, finding them irritating rather than fun, but I love the sense of exploration in some of these games, and I believe they partly inspired the idea of MVR.

Anyway, recently I've been playing 'Uru: Ages Beyond Myst', and there's a section where you go into some kind of temple/gallery, whereupon the most haunting piece of music begins - just a single female voice with minimal accompaniment, singing without words. There's something about this combined experience - of visiting the beautiful place while listening to this ethereal music - that, alone, is worth owning the game for. Sometimes I just load it up and wander around the gallery with the music playing, rather as I might visit and linger in any real favourite place.

I recently discovered the whole soundtrack exists on CD, and so now I can play this short piece (it seems to be called, rather uninterestingly, 'Gallery Theme' ) whenever I like. Anyone else know it? - have any comments on it?

I will look that one up. It's surprising sometimes the quality of music that can be found in some games (it's true that most of it's crap), and I've found myself several times extracting the soundtrack if it doesn't already exist. I think I've mentioned before my liking forthe music from things like the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series of games.

Absolutely! Game Soundtrack's Rock! The Myst series have brilliant music, Alan, I agree. :D

Examples: Halo, The Sims (original), Unreal Tournament (original), Uplink, Warzone 2100 and of course Outcast. If you can handle listening to synthesised music and can just appreciate the composition, then try Final Fantasy VII's Soundtrack too. Brilliance!

I'm less convinced about some of the other pieces on the Uru CD - they all work very well within the game, but perhaps not so well as stand-alone music, with a few exceptions. They're pleasant enough - but by comparison the two and a half minutes of 'Gallery Theme' are pretty special.

I don't normally play computer games, so this is the first time I've encountered any good music originating from a game, apart from MusicVR.

Game music has really surprised my a few times. I save a special place in my heart for the music from SimCity 3000. It's one of my favourite games, and the music just makes it even better for me. I even burnt it onto a CD.

I have Myst, Myst Masterpiece, RealMyst, Riven, Myst 3 Exile, Myst 4 Revelations, Uru Complete Chronicles. All I have left to get is Myst 5 End of Ages.

And that being said, I love the music from all of them. Especially the first 2. Haven't gotten very far in Uru yet, but the first desert area has a nice acoustic guitar tune.

As far as computer game music goes I like the old adventure game soundtracks. Such an abundance of excellent music to be found there! Especially from the old Sierra and LucasArts games such as King's Quest and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

Check them out here. If you're looking for good game soundtracks or just good music check it out!

http://www.queststudios.com/ - check out the King's Quest 5 CD soundtrack section. I contributed one of the recordings to that soundtrack.

Yea, Myst was a great game. I love the 3d realmyst version the best where you walk around in a real 3d environment. The stoneship age is especially beautiful on a Radeon 9800 pro. Riven was amazing. Really deep. Beat it though (with the help of my dad and uncle, though). Now am on Exile but I'm a bit stuck ATM. I've checked out the beginning of Revelations to see what it's like and I was surprised to find it merely a revised Myst 3 engine. I thought it was going to be full-fledged 3d. But at least Myst 5 is.

@Alan: I'll have to check out this Gallery Theme track. Are they all mp3 files on the cd? Sounds interesting.

You mean on the soundtrack CD? Yes - at least, that's what Nero says they are, and I'm too ignorant to know any better. 'Gallery theme' is the fifth track. (Curiously there's some additional material on the soundtrack CD that my computer doesn't know how to play, which seems odd.)

You can get to the gallery relatively early in the game, once you've solved the initial problems in the cleft; and I must say that the impact of it first time you hear it, in context, with the full visual effect, is breathtaking. You may not wish to spoil that by hearing the music first.

Having seen all the Myst games up to and including Exile, and agreeing that they are amazing - I must say that Uru beats them all in terms of sheer beauty, spectacular scenery and the sense of exploring a thoroughly convincing virtual world.

Does anyone remember the micky take of Myst, called Pyst?
I never played it myself, but I remember seeing John Goodman on the cover art.

Hi Alan,

I have been playing Uru on-and-off for half a year following a brief discussion about it in one of our on-line Maestro games, but have reached the point of terminal frustration where I'm debating whether to soldier on, or release some disk space.

I try not to use walk-throughs but I find some of the solutions in Uru so obscure that I cannot see how any sane person would discover them by themselves.  I'm even having trouble following one particular walkthrough for "The Path of the Shell" add-on - hence the frustration.

Anyway, back on topic, I'm not sure what you mean by the Gallery Theme.  Does it play in the big hall where there are all sorts of clocks and rotating symbols, or is it somewhere else?

I can't say that I find much games music particularly striking; it's mainly there to cover the silence isn't it?  Having said that, the music in Riven was quite atmospheric and added to the overall ambience. It's a pity Riven has not been done in 3d as, to me, it is the best in the series.

Oh I agree entirely, TTM. The obscurity of some of the puzzles is beyond all belief, and without a walkthrough I'd have stopped playing Uru long ago. I'm also irritated by the awkward jumps that you sometimes have to accomplish in parts of the game.

But laying all that aside (and with a walkthough you can lay most of it aside), it remains a vast, astounding, beautiful, and temptingly explorable virtual world.

I don't think there can be any confusion about the part where you hear the gallery theme. I don't know the name of the place. It's a large gallery with symmetrical curved staircases at one end, and vertical pillars along the sides, with colourful abstract images on the walls that contain the solutions to some of the puzzles. In the centre at one end is a small raised platform between pillars with a lectern and linking book, and behind those are indeed some rotating symbols on pedestals. But the real characteristic is the music. There's nothing else like it - it really stands out, with that single female voice - so beautiful that you can't miss it.

Oh the SOUNDTRACK cd. I thought you meant the soundtrack was in MP3 format on the game cd. Well, I'll just have to play through the game, now.

And you can do so secure in the knowledge that you don't need to get very far before you reach the 'special' bit....

Yeah TanGram, I played Pyst myself!
Great stuff.
In one of the scenes you see a totally wrecked trailer on a campsite that looks like a garbage dump.
You can guess my surprise when I saw Jeff Zandi sitting in front of a trailer at the beginning of Uru.

Music from Sim City 3000, The Sims 1 + 2 are wonderful! The Sims tunes are very catchy and cheery, and Sim City 3000's jazzy bits get me grooving in my seat ;)

The music from the 'Cool boarders 4' trailer is GREAT! :D

I remember that one. Have both of those games.

There's also that first track on Homeworld that was really nice. Ambient, but nice.

I own music from "Riven" (but I don't own the game) and it is quite good. It seems that music is done by the main designer of the game himself (one of the two brother from "Cyan").
