Some bits of music seem to me to *demand* volume. Earth shattering floor shaking tooth loosening volume. Below are some segments that I've always felt needed to be louder. Whatever amp/speaker/HiFi setup I've had hasn't been enough to do them justice, they always seem to need *more* volume. Picked-up-by Icelandic seismometers volume. Subwoofer the size of Kansas volume...

From the Chess musical: The Deal (No Deal)  at 3:16

Greg lake: I believe in father xmas at about 2:00

And of course, Mike! Ommadawn Lost Demo when the timps come in at 14:00 (or 4:06 in this extract)

While the above bits of music might not all be ones that appeal to you, does anyone else feel this way about any segments of music? If so which bits?

Did you know that catchy tune comes from Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kijé, Matt? Lieutenant Kijé was an imaginary figure dreamed up by a bureaucracy to disguise an administrative error; you can see Lake's witty parallelism to use the theme in conjunction of a discussion of Christmas.

I tend to crank up Eric Claptons music at parties.

Matt - Yes - agreed, that moment needs to be heard much louder and upfront without it distorting.

The guitar solos on TB pt2 Exposed and Pink Floyds High Hopes always make me turn it up to 11.
Also OMD's Messages gets the same treatment :D

Ditto on the above post and Anthony Phillips "Nightmare".

In order to fully appreciate the early Gary Numan albums you have to listen to them loud. You don't realize that until you really crank it up.

There is the intro of a Queen song, "Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy", which is really nothing at all (thin as air) until you turn it really up. Ditto for the piano intro of APP's "Ammonia Avenue", and one more thumb up to Jim re. Antony Phillips ("The Geese & the Ghost"). As for music that sounds best when played loud, well, to me this is valid for most of PSB's album Behaviour, which is excellent but somehow too quiet.

@ Matt: judging by your logic, 1:19, 1:21, 1:27, 1:29 and all the other similar instances in this one should be louder, but I'm really not too sure about this. :)

Speaking of Queen , Innuendo is one that I like to play LOUD especially the solo and preceding folksy bit .
