Hi all,
My name is Johnny and i'm 14, I've been into Oldfield and other great musicians such as Jean Michelle Jarre all my life, encouraged to by my parents. I recently started to write an album insprired by Olfield and Jarre also a few other greats such as Rush and Dream Theater. My only doubt is 'Can i justify it?' I look on MTV and all there is talentless band after band who dont write their own music, everything is done for them.....Correct me if i'm wrong but music is an art not entertainment. These people have corrupted music in our society, i am one of very few oldfield fans of my age and will music will be nothing in a short while. I'm writing this album for myself, success isn't really a goal i just want to make good music and i want others that listen to it to enjoy what i make. Wish me luck, Thanks

Good for you Johnny - You have the correct attitude that will produce music that is ART. Whether people like it or not, it is worth infinitely more that 'sucessful' or 'popular' trash of today.

I'd love to hear whatever you create - can you put ome on MP3 and post for us to hear?

Tim

crises, i really enjoyed reading your post...

i also think that art fades away when music becomes mainly an 'entertainment product'...
what we've got around? i mean... watching tv one can think there's a great need of making money... don't know what happens in other countries but here, in spain nowadays something is happening around music... there has been a boom with music contests... u know, from thousands of teenagers and early-twenties a jury choose twenty more or less and they enter an academy where they receive classes around a lot of musical and interpretational matters and once a week there's a special programme where one of them is kicked out by the jury and the public...
some of them really have good voices but... when u listen to them... hard to explain... it seems they are empty... the reason for the music they sing was born far away from them... they are taught how to interpretate feelings...  but empty anyway... they work under a lot of pressure and it's something like u can feel the singer as a piece of a big machine... the whole show, that cares not mainly for the music... but for the audience and all what this mean...
and i completely agree with what u said about mtv... imho at the moment it has nothing to do with what it was at the origin...

so, it's nice reading words as yours, crises
best luck for u
and please, let us know when u've got something available ok?
:)

Well done Johnny! i agree most of what todays music industry calls a musician is realy just a DJ ripping off someone elses talent and most of them can't even read music let alone play it. the whole of the music world is in a bit of a mess at the moment cos ther are some singers who are thrown together and call bands, now if i'm right a band plays instruments yeh? now lets take that Hear Say rubbish, i'm from the same town as that Kym Marsh girl and i know she can't play anything and she's was only a kareoke singer in the pubs,RANT anyway good for you mate, keep it up and all the luck in the world!

Can you justify it? Yes. If you want to make it, that's justification enough. Of course, if you start talking financial justification, that's a different matter...it would be better if you stayed away from that area of thought entirely, though, as music and money don't tend to mix too well.

Music is and art and not entertainment...I'd say that art is a form of entertainment. It's a very highly regarded form of entertainment, of course, but I'd say that in the end it's created for enjoyment - we can't eat art, use it for shelter or anything like that (well, in some cases that's not true - art can be incorporated into things which can be eaten and sheltered under, but it doesn't have to be there - an artistically created piece of food holds no better nutritional value than a set of raw ingredients, it's just that we may enjoy it more). It's something to entertain the mind and the emotions...and of course it may communicate something as well (you could argue that the communication part is something additional to it being purely entertaining...there'd be a counter to that, but this could end up being a looooong discussion...I guess I've partly opened the can of worms already here, but at the moment I'd rather not let them roam too freely across the floor...). That's not to say that art isn't useful, of course, far from it. I'd imagine that everyone here know what art can do for people...

Anyway, keep chasing your dreams, and do it the way you want - your happiness is what's most important at the end of the day.
