I have developed a mathematical formula for calculating how good Mike's albums are.

1. Take an album by Mike Oldfield
2. Give it a thorough listen
3. Divide the number of good tracks by the total number of tracks on the album.
4. Multiply the result by 100, and round off the decimal numbers
5. You now have a rating expressed as a percentage...

Here is how Mike's various albums rate using this theory...

I´d use the Schrödinger equation to do it!
:D

Or you can use my formula. Give 5 ratings from 0 to 10 in 5 cathegories: Fun factor, Ressonance, Originality, Richness and Solidness. Sum up these grades and divide by 5, and then add or subtract a few points for special reasons, if necessary. The result is a rating from 0 to 10, in steps of 0.5. According to this rating, Amarok gets a 10, Tubular Bells gets a 10, Tubular Bells II gets a 4, Crises gets an 8.5, Five Miles Out gets a 7.5 and Heaven's Open gets a 9. Now that's accuracy. :)

I'd like to see where Wanderers rating system gets me, and compare them to my actual ratings. This system won't really work for albums of five or less tracks, becuase If you only like half of a long intrumental you have no option but to say you like it all. OK, here we go:

Tubular Bells:
Wanderer's System: 50%
My rating: 70%

Hergest Ridge
Wanderer's System: 0% (See what I mean about this not working? )
My rating: 60%

Ommadawn
Wanderer's System: 50%
My rating: 75%

Incantations
Wanderer's System: 50%
My rating: 75%

Platinum
Wanderer's System: 50%
My rating: 70%

QE2
Wanderer's System: 33%
My rating: 65%

Five Miles Out
Wanderer's System: 60%
My rating: 80%

Crises
Wanderer's System: 50%
My rating: 85%

Discovery
Wanderer's System: 50%
My rating: 85%

Islands
Wanderer's System: 28.5%
My rating: 50%

Earth Moving
Wanderer's System: 22%
My rating: 60%

Amarok
Wanderer's System: 100% (not much choice really! )
My rating: 85%

Heaven's Open
Wanderer's System: 50%
My rating: 70%

Tubular Bells II
Wanderer's System: 57%
My rating: 90%

Songs of Distant Earth
Wanderer's System: 47% (Oh dear, wrong!!! )
My rating: 85%

Voyager
Wanderer's System: 10%
My rating: 45%

Tubular Bells III
Wanderer's System: 63.5%
My rating: 90%

Guitars
Wanderer's System: 30%
My rating: 75%

Millennium Bell
Wanderer's System: 36%
My rating: 60%

Tres Lunas
Wanderer's System: 31%
My rating: 75%

Tubular Bells 2003
Wanderer's System: 53%
My rating: 80%

As you can see, all the ratings are much too low. I might be too harsh deciding what is a good track or not, but I think it is because that an album with only four good songs on it can still be a great album if those four songs are very good and the rest are just OK. Guitars is prehaps the biggest example. Muse, Summit Day and Out of Mind are excellent, and the rest are OK, so it deserves 70%, not 30%. it's an interesting system, but it dosen't quite work.

WANDERER SAYS:
If a track is "okay but not brilliant", I still count it as a good track... tracks like "Muse" aren't masterpieces, but they are pleasant to listen to (to me, anyway). I only count as bad, pieces that are so bad I'm loathe to listen to them at all.

But you're right in a way...

Tracks like "Watchful Eye", "Supernova" and "Sunset Door" aren't that great to listen to on their own, but they function as important linking sections between other tracks and are integral to the fabric of the album... since an album like "Songs Of Distant Earth" is really two long instrumental pieces anyway.
