(To Oliver: I know that this forum is thought to be a place for exchanging ideas, but I have a strong desire to reach Mike; why is there no 'message to mike' forum? I sure Mike would have a glance once in a while ... )

*** THIS IS TO YOU MIKE! *******************

I want to express my deepest thanks for all those great moments you have given me (and many others). Writing this message is the least I can do.

I have been carefully listening to you for soon 20 years now. If you knew how much your music means to me ... I am not a WannaBe fan, I don't try to look like you, or to play like you (but I wish I could) ... It all comes down to one simple thing: your music talks directly into my heart. It is simply a question of the quality of your music. I simply have to play it over and over again, I can't  get enough. In particular, I constantly have to return to the following moments:

   * In The Beginning, Let There Be Light, the first few minutes of Supernova, the last minute of Oceania when it becomes the wonderful Only Time Will Tell, and then Ascension. Those are my all time music moments, the ultimost Beauty!!!!!!!!!! The guitar playing!!! The beats! And all those touching synths; the keyboard work is nowhere so increadibly beautiful as here!!

   * Boxed Hergest Ridge, Part I from the beginning, up to and including the oboe- and guitar theme ... What an underrated composition!

   * Incantations. All of it. It is simply such a superb work, one can listen to it for a life time! Why don't you like it, Mike? It is so heavily genious!!! Brilliant!!!

  * Amarok. That power, all those details, all those crazy guitars, so rich ...  so brilliant, amazing ... !!!

I could mention many more moments (see the forum 'Favourite MO moments' ). But those above are the most important to me, they will last a life time. They are almost like a religious experience, I really can not imagine that an HUMAN could have composed them. Did you really, Mike? Or did they always exist as a part of Universe and you discovered them?

Deepest possible RESPECT for Mr. Mike Oldfield.

Thanks Mike!

Hi,

I've always heard that if you send some message to the Mike Oldfield Information Service it would eventually reach him...

Who knows  ;)

Yes, adding a drop box to the site, where Mike can read his messages, is one of my projects. There could be a public drop box where everybody can read the posts, and a private one, where only Mike can read it. I would just have to send to the persons who can contact him a password, and then he could login whenever he wants and see messages addressed to him.

That would be a nice feature to add to the website, a MO FAQ would be nice where people can post questions, and he can post answers. That way fans could see if he's already answered the questions that want to ask like "What's your favourite instrument" or "What's your favourite album". I'm sure that it would help reduce the fan mail when he re-releases TB. :)

Keep up the good work on the site btw - it's my number one resource!

That would be nice ... although I hope the questions will be more substancial.

(The answers are "Guitar", "Millenium Bell"(!!!;) ).

One thing to remember though he hate's answering 'why' questions. Infact I get the impression he hates anwering any questions to do with music full stop.

I got most of my questions answered during that radio 2 online web chat by deliberatly staying away from anything to do with music.

If he were to be persuaded to take part it would probably appeal to him more if it were kept light hearted and silly. Mike's sense of humour is one of the things I love about him.

ps Tom Newman once said in an interview that Mike was only interested in 3 things in his life. Making music, making and flying radio controlled model aircraft and sex. Tom then said 'and I can safely sat he's very good at 2 of them.' ;)

Hey , the mans made his money, he can now do what he wants..

Most likly the last thing he wants is adoring fans round him, writing to him, etc, this man going by his life style over the years does likes his privicy, and after producing such brilliant works over his musical career, he should be entitled to be left alone if he so wishes.

But if you ever see him walking along Hergest ridge, then shake hands with him and just say 'thanks' and walk on

Cheers MO fan

Doesn't he already know that he is worldwidely appreciated for his music? Look at his selling records! You can't be a bestseller if you make lousy albums or cd's. So he knows he is a brilliant musician and he is appreciated throughout the music industry and among the people who listen to his music.
I agree that from time to time he might need the confirmation of being appreciated, but then he can look on the internet and look out our posts! So let him be and if he wants input from his fans, he will find it one way or the other!

Another one of those guys who equalize commersial success with quality...

Then explain why Oasis or Bryan Adams sell 10.000 times better than Zelenka's brilliant orchestral works, or 10.000 more than e.g., Mike's Incantations or Amarok.

[I can easily give you another 1000 obscure examples of how wrong this equation is in general.]

Are there really nothing else to pick on than a fan expression his gratitude to Mike?

We're back to the apples and oranges debate again. Zelenka's works haven't sold that many copies because you have to have a certain taste in music to like them, and a lot of people don't have that certain taste Its the same story with Amarok and Incantations. Oasis have sold millions of records because they've written some great songs and a lot of people genuinely like them and they have a broad appeal, an album like Incantations is a great piece of music but it obviously won't and doesn't have such a broad appeal just like most classical music. There's no right and wrong here people are welcome to like what they like and buy what they buy.

Again we come back to the same old truth that say's just because you love a certain piece of art or music it doesn't mean that everybody should, remember its all subjuctive.

Yeah, there is no way to say that this album is not good even though it has sold however many thousand copies. The fact that it has sold so many means that heaps of people do think it is good. Heaps of people do think it is a quality album. There is always going to be people who do not like an album, just as there is going to be people that do like it. It is impossable to say that this is a good album and this is a bad album because it is a subjective thing. If I had my way Discovery would be a smash hit because I love the album, and no-one would be knocking Mike's 90s stuff, but there will always be someone who does'nt like those albums. Of course, the question of publicity will always help, I am quite worried that the best music ever that I will never stop loving is hidden away in some old shop and no-one has ever heard of it.

Then it's time to start buying things at random!

I've come across some good stuff that way - buying things that look interesting which are being sold for a cheap enough price (second hand stores and large record shops' sales are good for this) for it not to matter if I don't like them.
It's always worth looking out to see who's playing live in your local area as well - it's sometimes possible to come across some great musicians that way (depending, I suppose, on where you happen to live) and sometimes you'll find the concerts are free...

if the rumours about mike being sad about how tr3s lunas is doing were true (I hope they aren't)… then i’d like to say something to him…

some time ago i was reading about gaudí and there i found a sentence which made me also think about you and your work… it was something like a true artist is that who doesn’t care about the opinion of the rest of the world and never gives up chasing dreams, never mind how difficult or even impossible they seem… i think this fits pretty much with your work, imo u are (the same as gaudí was) a ‘dreams chaser’ , as far as I can understand by listening to your music u have always been quite honest and this may have a price... sadness sometimes, loneliness others... (but I think it should also have a prize)
and apart from honest i think you were also brave releasing something like tr3s lunas project, brave because in these days of global madness, a ‘peaceful game’ seems completely out-of-place and this is what is sad… but this could be an example for others… i wish it were…
in this days of global madness when a lot of people are being destroyed all around the world, when more than a half of the world’s population is hungry and angry and when the earth is being seriously hurt (just thinking about the horrible blooding scar in the atlantic ocean near from galicia’s coast, caused by a monstrous amount of ‘black gold’…) in these days, tr3s lunas is for me a symbol for other paths we could choose… a peaceful project, full of beauty, and good intentions

I wish music could actually be a language to understand each other in this mad world rather than just a product to be packed and sold and... most painfully... valued for how it does in the market...

so... please mike… keep on searching for your own dreams and smile cause u can be proud about your work.

my best wishes for u all in 2003
:)

Now that's how I discovered Mike's music in '75...

Oh, and a HAPPY newyear to you all  ;)
