Greetings forum, I'm new here as my post count will reveal.

To cut to the chase, if you don't want to read below, I uploaded a clip from the mystery song here: Warning!  The audio quality is not good, but I was able to do what my limited skills could to the sound to clear it up and make it louder.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/tcyqymyzxzt/songtwo.mp3

I am a physics student and I work for our university planetarium, and those  two things started me on a hunt for a collection of mystery songs.  Every fall, our planetarium does a Halloween show, in which there are a selection of music. Just recently, our planetarium engineer passed away, and we are looking for the original sources of the music to "remaster" the audio collection of his favorite show, as the current one was recorded from magnetic source.

Why do I think this may be a Mike Oldfield song in some way, well I was able to solve the mystery of the other two songs by a lot of Google searching.  The first mystery song was labeled "Pithdown man", and the third was "Omma" on our SAW32Plus track player.  I later came to find out the first song was "piltdown man", not "pithdown", as was labed.  After a lot of searching, I came across a review of "Tubular bells 2003" called "caveman", and tada!  There it was, but with a female voice duet, and a slightly slower tempo.  This lead to the third one of "Omma", which turned out to be "OmmaDawn", and the piece in question happened to be the ending of Part 2 of Ommadawn.

So, I am left with trying to figure out what the second piece is.  With the number of Oldfield stuff cropping up, I thought it would be a good idea taking it to the people that know their Oldfield music :)   So, is this Oldfield, or have any hints on what it might be if it isn't?

Thanks everyone, I look forward to your replies if you have a moment.  :D

Greetings, delta. That's a nice piece, but I haven't come across it, before. Although I'm not familiar with all of Mike Oldfield's rarities, I don't think that's one of them. Unfortunately, I haven't a clue who the artist may be. Good work on solving the mystery of the other pieces, though. Kudos to you.

Sounds like part of a movie sountrack.

It's a little snippet from Vangelis' "Heaven And Hell, Part 2", about 11 minutes in.  The pitch was increased a bit.

Still quite an excellent album in spite of it's age, or perhaps because of it's age.   ;)

A digital "High Five" unto you! 101!

Thanks to every else to for giving a go at the mystery :D

As well, slightly new issue, but I am not sure if I am to post it here.  I am beat my head against a wall trying to find a higher fidelity version of the original tubular bells, but everything seems off the original LP.  Anyone know of a good source of the original tubular bells?   I check with amazon, and preview the 2003 version, but the "Caveman", or "piltdown man" man song had a duet with a women, and it will not work in the show :(.

I just was pointed in the direction of a "remastered" ommadawn release and it sounds great.  I compared it to an LP version and the individual sounds "Pop" and stand out instead of being a fuzzy, warm mass of sound.

Any additional help in the new hunt would be most helpful. :D

@ Delta.  I don't think there is a higher fidelity version than the most recent remaster.  The "Elements" box set contains the entire piece on disc one that was nicely remastered at Abbey Road, but it's a bit "bright" sounding.  The remix on "Boxed" is good sounding too, but a little hissy.  The 25th Anniversary edition sounds great but is clipped by a couple of frames at the beginning of "Part Two".  Are you saying MO's regular CD's aren't available where you are, or are you saying you want only a good-sounding vinyl version?

Edited to include the following PS:
I took a good long listen to "Boxed" yesterday and today.  It seems a lot less hissy to me now than I recall.  I think my ears were tricking me into remembering that the original vinyls of "Boxed" were a bit hissy to me way back when dinosaurs ruled the Earth.

I just don't get this discussion. IMO I have had a perfectly fine copy for years, perfect in every way. Virgin 2-90589. A CD bought around 1999 or 2000.

Figured out the problem.

The sites provided crappy previews.  Found a CD in a prof's collection that was a more recent tubular bells, so it saves me the trouble with amazon.

Thanks all, cheers :D

So what was this Hallowe'en show about?  Was it like a laser light show?

BTW, if the Prof is into MO, he's a cool Prof.

Its a bit of everything.  Our custom built x-y laser bench is currently down, so the show is limited to a battery of stationary lasers with fog dispensers, our Chronos star projector, Spitz-all dome video projector, and another battery of slide projectors and lighting effects.

For example, the Mike Oldfield "Caveman,or pilhdown man" is used as our pumpkin song.  Around the rim of the planetarium are carved pumpkins with orange, variable intensity lights in them.  The song in use currently has some other sound effects put into it, so as it plays, it appears the pumpkins are singing in these apparent "tongues".  There is about a 10% increase in track speed, from what I can tell from a raw dividing of the time of the current video, and the CD track time.

But, that's just an example of one of the show's segments.

There is also hot, buttered popcorn, 3rd rock from the sun, and other songs mentioned.  Its a varied show and I needed the names of the songs to update the tracks with higher fidelity sources.

Unfortunately, its not that the prof listens to mike oldfield, the track has been there for a while so I am not sure who had his music.  :)

I'm getting a little bit off topic here with this post, but I just wanted to add that on TB 2003 Mike does not do a duet with a woman. The woman is Mike himself with a vocal effect. :D
